Y/n's POV

The Phoenix appeared in a whirl of red and orange light behind the bus. Her eyes locked on me, crouched on top of the yellow roof. Fire streaked towards us in devastating fireballs, forcing me to block with solid walls of air.

Blue light caught my eye and I knew Nik had joined me. "Get the kids inside."

"Come on," Nik said, his voice snatched by the wind. "Y/n, come on."

"Just a minute," I lied.

After they dropped down through the emergency hatch, I jumped down and landed on the dirt.

It hurt, being aware that I was so close to Newt and yet unable to see him, but it hurt more to set eyes on her.

More fire swirled around me, forcing me to shield myself with air. Catching a second's break, I send a current of air whipping up dirt and at the same time lightning at her. I released the illusion over the city and focused on attacking her. My energy rebounded, allowing me to throw lightning and air and everything I had at the woman who ruined my life.

Fire burned against everything, pushing back. I shielded myself as another wave tore towards me and picked up chunks of rubble to hurtle. Every rock blew apart before striking her. Behind the carnage and out of my sight, she teleported right in front of me and grabbed me. The ground gave way beneath my feet and then we were somewhere else.

A horn beeped and I found myself about to be run over by a yellow bus for the second time that day. I rocketed upwards, landing back on the roof. Darts of matter shot at me, nicking my arm. The woman was running to join in on the fun.

A piece of concrete slammed into her at my command, sending her body cracking through a brick wall hard enough to break all the bones in her body.

"You good?" Nik called, having opened the hatch to poke his head out.

"I'm not having a good day!" I shrieked back over the wind. "I'll lead her away."

I traced the way from where Vince's answer had come from. Within the city walls. He must have been separated from Alex.

Luring the Phoenix was surprisingly easy. All a person needed was to make her hate them more than anything else. I led her back into the city before disappearing under an illusion. I heard her screaming something behind me, but ignored it.

After jumping the wall, I went deeper into the city, where the markets were predominantly gathered. A group of people hurtled by me, making me skid and nearly trip over a broken piece in the pavement. They headed into one of the buildings, vanishing out of sight.

Vince's name was on the tip of my tongue, but he was already gone.

Austin was quick to follow them, metal gleaming from where it followed him. I swore and sprinted after them.

"I don't think we've had the pleasure of meeting," Austin crooned, having trapped them on the highest floor.

People were scattered around us, hiding behind chairs as they waited for a chance to run. Frantic whispering weakened the dreadful silence. Wicked was banned from the city. They hated Wicked here ever since Élliot entered the role of king.

"Back off!" Vince snapped, empty hand held in the space between them

They stepped back until they were against the window. Nowhere to go. Thomas and Fry were with him, both glanced back through the glass, seeing how far there was to fall.
