TW: violence and death

Dangling by his ankles, Marcus swung in the faint breeze over the pit of Cranks. From there, he had an excellent view of Cranks climbing over each other in their attempts to reach him. By then, nearly a hundred had been trapped. It had taken us barely an hour to catch them after tracking down where they were lurking.

Nik and I surveyed the bloody mess of stick thin limbs and bodies below. The stench was unbearable, near enough to make us sick. I tried not to think about how they had once been living people with a family, siblings.

The possessed boy—unconscious despite the chorus of wailing screams—was tied to a chair while we worked.

The sun set, we were running out of time.

"Wake him," I instructed Nik.

He placed a hand on the boy's head. A second later, he jerked awake and looked wildly around until his eyes settled on me.

"Hello again, Phoenix." I smirked at her. All fake. I had to pretend to remember what I had done earlier.

"Y/n," the Phoenix spat. "Where is she?"

"The Snake? Dunno, I upheld my side of the bargain."

The boy's face hardened with the Phoenix's annoyance and anger. "Aren't you worried I'll teleport here? You've given me such..." She hesitated upon seeing Marcus. "...wonderful view of the room."

"Actually, if the Snake is missing, I reckon you've been teleporting around all day looking for her. You're exhausted, you don't have the energy to come here."

"Tell me where she is, or I'll kill your boyfriend right now."

"So Wicked is currently attacking the Right Arm and you have a possessed person there. Perfect." I smirked at her again, staring at her eyes. Coralie had underestimated me yet again.

"Perfect?" she repeated.

"Yep," I replied and slid into the boy's mind.

I raised my other hand. White energy streaked from it and wrapped around the Cranks below, an illusion, in reality it was shadows, the Phoenix could not know that I was the Wraith just yet. The shadows cut through the air and started draining the Cranks. Energy poured into me and I slammed into the boy's mental barrier, breaking it.

Below me, in my mind's eye, I saw a red spiderweb stretching out. I could feel the Phoenix fighting back but I ignored her. I searched the web until I found a concentration the possessed Enhanced in one place within a couple hours drive of here.

"Nik, do it,' I said and heard him sing some random part of a song, buying me time to pick my target.

I took a steadying breath and fought against the Phoenix for control over one of them. Pain flooded through me and I bit back a scream. I could feel Nikolai's hands on my shoulders, grounding me.

"—I dunno anymore, cause some chaos," he was saying.

I dug into a girl's head, grappling for control.

Ratman was there, frowning as he stepped closer.

Words left my mouth—the girl's mouth—Coralie's words. "They're in my head!"

Then the actual girl's. "Please, please, leave me alone, please."

Her mind was recoiling, trying to hide.

I pushed on, seizing control.

"Phoenix?" Ratman asked.

I let out a laugh, in full control of the girl now. I straightened, smirking at Ratman.
