Y/n's POV

Last night was a mess of blurred memories, almost as if I was drunk. That wasn't possible considering I had gone straight to bed. Nik said he didn't remember me waking him up. Thomas said he remembered me going out of the tent but not going back in. I didn't remember going back or how I got back to bed.

"Vinceeeee, I'm bored," I complained the second I reached his side.

Vince, busy surveying some maps, barely looked up. "Go play with Archie and Aaliyah."

Being around Archie was possibly the worst idea ever but I couldn't exactly say no without raising suspicions. Plus, with the energy I felt today, I was confident I could control the Wraith.

I found them a moment later playing tag, Archie chased Aaliyah around, giggling all the while. They ran around a car until Archie changed directions and collided into her.

"Tag!" he crowed but cut himself off.

They stared at me and I stared back.

"Oh, children. May I please join you?" I flopped dramatically on the ground. "I'm in danger of dying of boredom."

"Why do you go to Nik and Alex?" Archie asked, giggling at my act.

I scrunched up my nose. "They're so boring, they never do anything fun anymore. It's always, 'Y/n, no.' 'Y/n, that's dangerous. 'Y/n, don't eat that, you'll die.'" I pulled a face. "They're like grownups."

They looked at each other in silent communication which they had developed given Aaliyah's refusal to speak.

"Okay, but we're going to play hide and seek now," Archie declared.

I beamed, already on my feet in a heartbeat. "Who's in?"

"You."

"How long do I count?"

"Sixty," Archie decided.

I nodded. "Okay. One rule, don't go outside the camp."

"No abilities," Archie countered. "And no asking Felix or anyone else."

"Deal." I covered my eyes and turned around. "One...two..."

I slowed my counting towards the end, giving them more time to hide. "Ready or not, here I come!"

I couldn't immediately see them, this was going to be more fun than I thought. I began an extensive search of the area. In all my years, I had never lost a game of hide and seek, I wasn't about to lose to this pair. There were crates to check, cars they could hide in, blankets they could crawl under. I checked the crates first before I began checking the cars. The tray was empty.

"Come out, come out, you little—" I cut myself off abruptly, suddenly aware of the people watching. My friends, Thomas and Brenda.

Newt.

Pain twisted in my heart, breaking through the strange sense of calm I felt. The stab of it was more than I had felt for days. However, this meant very little considering I had spent the past several days as a raging homicidal maniac.

Brenda raised a single dark eyebrow.

"—children. Little children. That's exactly what I was going to say," I finished and dropped down on my knees to peer under the car.

A single piece of paper sat in the dirt. Since several words were carefully written on it, I picked it up.

Come find me instead.
