48 days after his death

I woke up alone in bed. Late morning light streamed through the cracks in the curtains, lighting up the room. I pushed myself into a sitting position and glanced around to make sure Élliot wasn't living up to his reputation as a creep. The room was truly empty and I was alone.

'Hello?' I asked in my mind.

The Wraith didn't answer but I knew she heard me. I could feel her in the back of my head, minding her time until she decided enough was enough and she would pry control from my hands.

I lay back down and curled up in the warmth of the blankets for a while before I finally broke down. Hiccuping sobs left me as I tried to muffle the sound but burying my face into the pillow already wet with my tears. All I wanted was for this to be over. To die on my own terms. I didn't care about the consequences anymore. If people suffered because I gave in or died, I didn't care. I just wanted to cease existing.

No, I have to fight. Why the hell couldn't I believe and want that?

Several minutes later, someone knocked loudly on the door and I heard people arguing before it opened. I jolted up, trying to cast an illusion over my face. To my humiliation, the Wraith stopped that. I desperately wiped my cheeks.

Kei barged in, Bella right on his heel scolding him. Leo stayed in the doorway, the first to notice my state. The other two noticed a couple seconds later. They both froze and then Kei spoke.

"You looked feral yesterday but somehow you look even worse today," he said and Bella stood on his foot hard enough for him to cry out.

Leo's face turned into a soft smile at the sight.

"Get out!" Bella shoved him towards the door.

"Alright! Alright! Crazy girl! I'm going!" he yelped and walked for the door.

"Crazy?" Bella shrieked after him.

He ran the rest of the way and quickly closed the door. Bella cleared her throat and came and sat next to me. I sniffed and wiped at my face again.

"We've all broken down after we first got here," Bella said awkwardly. "It's nothing to be ashamed of. Our lives have all been difficult in some way. Most of the Enhanced who come here are completely broken. If you want, I'll go get Élliot."

I shook my head. "I don't want him to see me like this."

"Go wash your face, it's nearly lunch and Élliot will come looking if you don't show," she warned and moved to the door.

She opened it, revealing Kei trying to eavesdrop. She kicked him hard in the shin and dragged him away by his ear. He protested and complained the entire time struggling to keep up with her brisk pace despite her much shorter legs. Leo quietly shut the door.

I made it to lunch with only slightly red eyes. Élliot smiled at me as I took the seat next to him.

"Nice jacket," Kei snickered, recognising it to be Élliot's.

"It's very hard not to throw you off the top of this building," I said, stabbing my fork through a piece of pasta.

"I think you'd find it very hard to do that. You're a sweet girl, you wouldn't," Kei said and looked almost confident in his answer.

I raised an eyebrow.

"She could," Élliot smirked, slipping his hand under the table to squeeze mine.

"I really doubt it," Kei said.

"Wanna bet?" I challenged him.

Kei went to reply but Leo spoke.
