Warnings: Newt being completely oblivious
Newt's POV
The skidding of a car breaking was the first thing I heard, which drew me to look up from my bowel of stew.
Élliot Laurent got out of the white car and slammed the door. "Splendid, you're all alive. I was concerned that I'd actually have to go to war."
Alex stabbed a piece of sausage. "Excuse me?"
"Don't get me wrong, I love her but a war with Denver."
"Excuse me?"
"She's gone off on a you-know-what," Élliot informed him cryptically, making Alex pause with the sausage midway to his mouth.
"Why are you here?" Vince demanded, barely sparing a glance for his son's reaction.
Élliot ignored him, instead choosing to focus on Alex. "Why couldn't you just have listened to me? I told you not to come after her."
The sausage fell from Alex's fork and landed in the dirt, making him wince. With a thud, he set the bowl down next him and stood from the rock. "You're the seer. Why didn't you see that?"
"I don't see every tiny detail, but you need to listen to me."
Alex rolled his eyes. "You keep saying you're all powerful but are you really compared to her? Why didn't you stop her?"
"You don't think I tried? She grows stronger with each day. I may be able to ease her suffering but I can't stop her. There's only a few people left who can match her power."
"Who?"
"Obviously Coralie, as well as the High King." Guilt flashed across his face, barely visible bar for his tightening mouth and downcast eyes.
The title again, always without name. I recalled the letter Y/n had recieved soon after Nik had died. He had asked her to head to Denver to help fight Wicked.
"You should pack up and leave," Élliot advised us. "Y/n's gone."
Alex shook his head, displacing his dark blond hair over his eyes. With a tired hand, he dragged it out of his view. "She's still in there. We need to convince her that we are sorry. We just have to let her come to us first."
A chuckle from Élliot broke the weight of Alex's words. "I'll be dead before that happens. The Y/n in your memories died the day she cut out that chip, you need to accept who she is now and whoever she becomes by the end of all this."
Sharp blue eyes flicked over our group, settling on me. "I will warn you, everything will get worse before it gets better, if it ever does. Y/n is the only person who can save her."
Alex scoffed, folding his arms defensively against his body. "How is she supposed to fight her own mind?"
Élliot winked cryptically. "You'll have to wait and see. Don't worry about her, I'll take care of her."
"What do you get from all this?" I asked finally, voicing the question that had been on my mind since witnessing him lie to her about Connor.
"You don't think I'm simply doing this out of the good of my own heart?"
"No."
Slowly, a smirk spread across his face. "Good, you might be smart enough to survive her."
None of us knew what to respond to that with.
"I love her," Élliot confessed with a twinge of pain drifting through his accent, "obviously. I've had visions of her for years. What do I get out of this? That depends on what future takes shape. I know I could have everything, I know I could have her, but that all depends on the path Y/n choses—as well as my own choices. Whatever future she ends up in, I will make sure she's happy. That'll be enough for me."
Despite his words, he looked so unbelievably miserable. It was similar to the deep emotional wound Y/n carried in her heart, weeping fresh pain constantly. It struck me that I knew so very little about him, not where he came from or what had happened to him. Whatever it was, I knew it rested heavily on him.
"She doesn't belong with the Right Arm anymore," Élliot continued, something changing in his eyes. "She's mine. She was always going to be mine."
Alex raised an eyebrow. "She's her own person."
"I should go, I know there's no point going anywhere." Élliot retreated back to the car and opened the driver's door. "Stay safe. Don't do anything stupid. Keep moving forward. Trust me."
The sun sank low over the hills, turning the sky a vivid orange and yellow. Unfortunately, the sky lacked any clouds. I always enjoyed watching them light up with colour.
Cold air settled in quickly, the temperature plummeting as it always did in the Scorch. I stuck my hand into my pockets and felt something hard brush against my knuckle. Withdrawing my hand, I searched one of the pockets on the inside of my jacket. My fingers closed around a small object. I took it out and held it in my hand.
The tiny statue was made of blue plastic, depicting a figure dressed in a rough cloak, their face hidden. The rough base of the statue encouraged me to turn it over. The bottom revealed it had been made in Denver. Frowning, I righted it and stared at it's cloaked head. I was certain the pocket had been empty when I found the jacket weeks ago. Someone had placed it there deliberately.
I looked around and instantly locked eyes with Alex. He broke eye contact immediately, turning his back and stretching his arms high over his head.
Silently, I slipped the statue back into my pocket.
