Warnings: angst

Y/n's POV

I woke alone, Newt already gone. Aaliyah was gone as well and as I left the tent I caught sight of her playing noughts and crosses in the dirt with Archie.

Together on the ground against a log were the two boys. Nik was asleep, head on Alex's shoulder and arm clumsily over his stomach. Alex's arm lazily surrounded my brother, keeping them close together.

I nudged Nik with my boot. He swatted at my leg clumsily before he froze. Slowly, his eyes cracked open and he realised the situation. Wincing at himself, he slowly detangled himself from Alex and climbed to his feet, his face redder than tomatoes.

I raised an eyebrow. Rolling his eyes, Nik grabbed my arm as he drew me away from Alex and the others still sleeping.

The dawn was breaking and already the temperature was rising.

"What do you want? It's too early for your shenanigans," Nik complained quietly.

I led him further away so we would be safe to talk.

"We need a plan for when it happens," I said and caught the twitch that tugged on the side of his face. "I want you to promise me something."

Nik waited for me to continue.

"Kill me when—"

"No!" Nik snapped immediately. His eyes burned like our ex-sister's fire as he glared at me. "How dare you suggest it."

I glanced around, noticing people were already looking at us. "If she takes control, she might hurt someone or worse," I argued in a whisper. "She could hurt Alex."

Nik seized me by my shoulders, looking me dead in the eye. "We will find a way to fix this, I promise."

He was delusional, his voice full of firm determination. There was no saving me, no matter what Élliot Laurent said.

"Promise me." I wasn't talking about fixing me.

"No!" Nik snapped, ripping his hands off my shoulders and stalking away towards Alex who had just woken up.

Alex was standing with my friends and Newt, all watching us as I ran after Nik.

I caught his arm and spun him around. "You know what will happen. Promise me."

Nik shook my hand off. "This isn't fair. Don't ask me again."

I tried to grab him again but he knocked me to the ground with his ability. Stones stung my palms as I broke my fall. He hesitated a second, probably not meaning to have knocked me over but he hurried away and I watched his retreating back. Wincing, I slowly got to my feet and dusted myself free of dirt and sand.

"You okay?" Vince asked as they came over. "What was that about?"

"Minor sibling disagreements," I answered, wiping my hands on my pants. "Alex, could you—"

Alex was already jogging after Nik.

The rest of my friends went away, busying themselves in packing up camp.

"What was that really about?" Newt asked, making me jolt as I hadn't realised he was still there.

I turned to him and mustered the best smile I could. "Nothing important, just a bit of a fight."

Newt saw straight through my poor performance with those beautiful brown eyes of his. "Why do you keep lying to me?" The misery coating his tone reached into my heart and stabbed it with guilt. "Why does Alex get to know and I don't? What's so important to hide that you have to lie to me over and over?"
