Warnings: mental illness

Newt's POV

Y/n sucked in a deep breath, letting it out just as her eyes flicked open, landing on Alex first. He stumbled back, choking on air.

"Y/n?" Jorge asked, pulling his gun from his belt.

In her silence, Brenda pulled Tommy and I away.

"Y/n?" Tommy asked, trying to step forward but Brenda wouldn't let him.

Y/n clucked her tongue. "I'm not Y/n. Have you not learnt anything about this world? I will cut you some slack since you have only encountered one of my kind and he's quite sane."

Thomas went very still.

"Y/n," I whispered.

"Well, two for you," Y/n said to me and flashed a wicked grin. "But Y/n erased your memory of that little girl she killed. Oh, I know, the horror. She did it to save you though. Isn't that so sweet that she drew on that girl's power knowing it would only hurt her more just to save you?"

Jorge raised his gun, pointing directly at her. "Step back, I don't wanna hurt you."

Y/n laughed properly for the first time in weeks, colder than even a winter night spent out in the desert. "Oh, come on. You hurt me? Don't be so ridiculous. Poor Livia barely lasted five minutes against me."

"Y/n—" I began.

"Y/n," Y/n mocked. "Y/n, Y/n, Y/n. God, I don't know how she didn't kill you herself. Horrible move to break up with her like that. Surely you, even in your naivety, noticed something was wrong with her?"

"Why are you speaking in third person?" Thomas asked as we moved away again.

Y/n rolled her eyes. "Hush, Tommy dearest. Now, what was I doing—ah, that's right, world domination."

"World what?" Tommy asked before Brenda clamped a hand over his mouth.

"Alex—" Jorge began but Y/n silenced him with a glare.

Vince, Fry and some of the other Right Arm came over.

"Good, you're all here," Y/n said, eyes flicking over the gathering crowd. She clapped her hands, almost vibrating with excitement. "Y/n said to tell you that she's sorry."

Alex's pulled his gun. His hand shook as he pointed it at her head.

Thomas grabbed my hand, holding tightly as we watched the scene. Something felt entirely wrong about the situation, as if I was watching it play on a screen.

"Do it," Y/n goaded, stepped closer until it was pressed against her forehead. "Doitdoitdoitdoit."

"Alex—" Vince started.

"Silence," Y/n snapped, flicking a spark of lightning at him.

Tears poured from Alex's eyes as he tried not to break down completely.

"Do it!" Y/n screamed, making him and others including myself flinch. She laughed as he didn't, cackling harshly. "You can't." She drew back, spinning to look around the crowd. Her hands dramatically faced skyward, still stained with her blood. "None of you can."

Alex let out a single sob before he spoke. "I'm so sorry, Y/n. None of this is your fault. I'm so, so, so sorry. Please, come back."

"She's gone," Y/n sang, a smirk splitting her face. "She fell. Here's the funny part: she chose to."

Alex folded, knees giving way as he sank to the ground. "Y/n—"

"That is not my name," Y/n said. "Say it."

Alex didn't answer.

"No? Fine." Y/n snapped her fingers and Alex's gun flew to her hand. "You were never going to kill her, even I knew that."

Vince looked back and forth between them. "What is she talking about?"

"When it happened, I would have to..." Misery washed across his face.

"When what happened?" Vince pressed.

"When she...lost."

"Lost what?" Vince asked incredulously. "You're not making any sense."

"When Y/n finally fell to her greatest enemy," Y/n said, eyes fever bright. "Her own mind."

Vince went still, his eyes slowly widening, mouth falling open.

"Well, I have places to be." Y/n started walking backwards, the crowd parted for her. "People to kill, Wicked to take down." Her smirk widened. "A world to dominate."

She turned and headed straight for one of the cars. Opening the door, she looked back. "I'm done being nice. Stay out of my way or I'll kill you. Don't come looking for me. Don't try to get her back because she's gone. That's it. The end."

She climbed into the car and an illusion wrapped around it, hiding it from sight as Y/n drove off into the night.

Nausea rolled around in my stomach. The world didn't seem real.

"How long have you known?" Vince asked Alex, still staring out into the night.

"Months," Alex confessed, pressing his hands to his face.

"We need to go after her," Vince decided, turning to look for a car. "She still has time left, we just need to get through to her."

"No, Dad," Alex interrupted, looking up finally as he dropped his hands. "She's had episodes since before the Maze and heard voices for over a year. The—the...Corrupt side of her said she fell, that she gave in. Y/n's gone, for real this time."

The word made it more real. More concrete.

"It's usually easy to tell if someone is because they're entire personality changes."

Alex's words from so long ago. I really was an idiot.

Y/n was one of the Corrupt. She was insane. She was gone and she wasn't coming back.

Vince sat down heavily next to his son. "What have we done?"

"Driven her straight over the edge yourselves." Élliot emerged from the crowd, face hard with scorn.

"And where were you?" Alex snapped, voice cracking. "She needed you."

"Whether you believe me or not, this is the way things need to happen. You need to realise just how gone she is or you'll all die and she will too." Élliot looked out into the dark.

"What the hell are you talking about?" Tommy demanded, strained as tears had started trickling from his eyes.

"I see the future," Élliot stated as if it were obvious. "Y/n wasn't joking about her world domination plan. If she continues down some of the paths, she will manage to wipe out most of the Cranks across this continent and build the greatest city since the Solar Flares destroyed the planet. She will rule at the expense of your lives and the misery of her people who will be forced to work to death to achieve her goals. She will become a tyrant, slaughtering at will."

"If she wipes out the Cranks, isn't it worth it?" one of the Right Arm girls asked. "She's still human, she will die eventually. By then, humans will at least have the technology and numbers to rebuild and fight against the virus. She'll even the playing field."

"The city will fall," Élliot mused, eyes drifting to the stars. "Humanity will fall again."

"So there is a way to stop her?" Alex asked. "A way to...kill her?"

Élliot glanced at him. "Don't go after her and certainly don't try to kill her."

"What then?" Alex demanded, standing up. "What do we do?"

"Plan, prepare, go after your Minho and the other Immunes. Let me go after Y/n."

Alex frowned. "Won't she kill you?"

Élliot smiled softly, the same one he had given Y/n over and over. "I don't think she will."
