Warnings: arguments, lots of angst
"What happened last night?" I asked Y/n the next morning as we lined up for breakfast.
Y/n flicked me an irritated glance. "Alex helped me to bed, I was tired."
"I meant after that."
A sigh slipped past her lips and she dragged a hand across her exhaudted face. "I went to sleep?"
"Y/n," I sighed.
"What?"
"With Nik?"
Y/n blinked slowly, staring at me while her face grew more and more confused. "I must have had a nightmare, don't worry about it."
I frowned, watching as she turned to face the people in front of us. "You were out of the tent for at least a quarter of an hour. What did Nik do to you? He used his ability."
"It's none of your business!" Y/n snapped finally, drawing the attention of the people around us. Red splotches of anger burned onto her cheeks, her eyes an inferno of the same fury. A single blink and it dimmed. More calmly, she said, "It's none of your business, Newt. Stay the hell out of my life."
With that, she turned on her heel and stalked away, breakfast forgotten.
"Nik must've done something to her memory," Felix murmured to me the second people lost interest in me.
I whirled around to face him. "We need to talk."
Felix sighed heavily but allowed me to drag him off and away from camp. Thomas, Fry, Jorge and Brenda were quick to follow us away from the main congregation of the Right Arm.
"What is going on?" Brenda demanded as we cornered him.
Felix's eyes flickered over us, then darted past us. "I don't know, I swear."
"Felix, answer the question," Jorge warned, folding his arms carefully over his coat. "We know something is wrong."
"I don't know!" Felix insisted, shooting a wild glance around us. "Alex is in on whatever secret Nik and Y/n are keeping."
A stab of betrayal split my heart. For weeks we had bonded over the shared knowledge that we were locked out of whatever they were hiding. Now he knew and I didn't.
"So, why hasn't he said anything to Vince?" Thomas asked, sharing a look with Fry. "Or Harriet and you? Whatever they're hiding mustn't be that bad if he won't tell anyone."
Felix shook his head, eyes wide. "There were a dozen Enhanced outside of camp last night. At least five of them were stronger than Nik and Alex."
"What?" Thomas demanded. "Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because Élliot Laurent told me not to, he said he had it under control. He must have, considering they left just before Y/n came back in. Last night..." he trailed off worrying his lip between his teeth. "She was actively using Callia's ability, I wasn't just sensing the aftershocks of it."
"How strong is it?" Jorge asked.
Felix opened his mouth and quickly closed it, shaking his head.
"Felix," Jorge warned again. "We want to figure this out as much as you do."
"Phoenix level, or stronger," he admitted and winced at the audible shocked gasps from the rest of us. "Some abilities seem similar, like Alex's shield ability and Nik's energy. Callia's ability feels like Y/n's lightning but not at the same time while also feeling like a particle controlling one. I can't describe it."
Jorge whistled lowly. "With the kind of power she has, why aren't we launching more attacks against Wicked?"
"You should talk to her about last night," Brenda suggested to Felix. "She seems to like you a lot more than the rest of us right now."
