The wind whipped sand into our faces as we ascended the dune in front of the building. My face stung, my throat already burning from the sand. I glanced back, looking at the building illuminated by bright fluorescent lights. Vehicles were beginning to flood out of the building.

That alone was enough for me to understand my brother had been subdued or possessed again.

"Come on!" We can lose them in the storm!" Thomas yelled over the noise.

We made it a fair distance before we laid on the sand for a break. A small dune shielded us from sight as we caught our breaths. Newt, next to me, sighed heavily. I reached for his hand, but he pulled away. When I looked at him, he didn't meet my eyes.

"Come, let's go!" Thomas got up and we all followed like sheep. "Stay low!"

We continued running for a bit, enough that I began to tire again. Newt was limping badly as he did when his leg was put under too much stress and he was tired. Minho helped him along since he was keen on ignoring me for whatever reason.

Likely the whole Nikolai business he didn't know about yet.

We eventually began to pass some broken buildings. Teresa, ahead of us, approached the side of one.

"Teresa, hang on! Stay together!" Thomas called out to her as she ran ahead.

"I think we lost them!" someone yelled, though I couldn't distinguish who's voice in the storm.

"Where are we even going?" Minho yelled as Newt slowed down. "Thomas?"

"Come on, Aris!" Thomas encouraged.

"Over here!" Teresa had found a broken window of a building and was peering into the darkness inside.

We gathered around it, frowning at what we couldn't see.

"Yeah, I vote no," I said but she went inside anyway.

"Teresa, wait! Don't go in there!" Thomas yelled and scrambled after her.

The rest of us followed them down the sand banked below the window. I half ran, half slid to the bottom, stumbling to a stop. Newt yelped behind me, making me turn as he tripped right behind me. I, being a great girlfriend, acted as a human pillow to catch him as he fell. We tumbled to the ground, him on top of me.

"Ow," I complained, the cans in my bag digging into my back.

Newt huffed, looking down at me. His brown eyes bore into mine accusingly. "You have lots of explaining to do."

"I don't understand half of what's going on," I wheezed as he got off me.

I stood and dusted the sand off me. I got the feeling that I would never be clean again after being in this desert. It took a fair amount of digging through my backpack to find the torch. Clicking it on, I shone it around the room to check we were safe.

"I vote we leave," I said.

"Why?" Teresa asked. "And what's with this 'vote' thing?"

"Because I have a bad feeling and I think we should have a democracy."

"Where even are we?" Frypan asked no one in particular.

I sighed loudly and put on a falsely cheerful voice. "Welcome to the Scorch, a large patch of desert stretching right across Mexico and all around the world! Full of—and you won't believe this—sand!"

They all frowned at me.

"And death. Lots of death," I added and frowned at myself. "Not sure where that came from, ignore me."
