Newt's POV
As soon as we were finished eating, we were taken to our room by a guard. He opened the door, and we entered. Bunk beds were fixed to the walls and stacked in the centre of the room. It was mostly grey, from the walls to the beds to the door and the only splashes of colour were yellow paint on the bunk bed ladders.
"I got top bunk!" Frypan declared and went to climb a ladder.
Minho shot ahead of him, pulling himself up to sit on it. "Too slow," he teased Frypan.
I shook my head at them as Frypan glared up at him. The playful banter was a welcome relief from the tense, miserable air that had settled over our group.
"I could get used to this," Winston said as he flopped down on one of the beds.
"Yeah, it's not bad," I said as I inspected the room. The beds looked far more comfortable than the straw ones back in the Glade.
The door closed and locked behind us, catching the attention of Thomas and I. We stared at the door for a few seconds.
"What do you think those guys want with Teresa and Y/n?" Thomas asked, tearing his eyes from the door.
"If there's one thing I know about those girls, it's that they can take care of themselves," I said, trying to comfort him even though I worried about Y/n. "Don't worry about it."
I didn't wait for him to nod before I climbed up one of the ladders and lay down. The tension drained from my body, relieving my back and leg. Pain throbbed through my ankle, sore after the stress of running.
I tried to sleep, the quiet talk from my friends provided some soothing background noise, but did little to chase away the faces of the Gladers we had left behind.
It had been my responsibility as second-in-command to look after them, but I had abandoned them.
Some time later, the door unlocked and opened. Y/n entered, turning to watch as it closed behind her and locked again. When she turned to face us, I tensed at the sight of her pale face. I quickly climbed down the ladder, ignoring my leg's protests.
"What happened? Are you okay?" I asked, reaching her side. My eyes combed over her for injuries, but found none.
She gave me a funny look. The white around her eyes was stained red, she had been crying. "I'm fine, they just had to run some tests. Teresa will be back soon, I think."
Y/n reached up and brushed some of her hair out of her face with a trembling hand. I reached for them, taking them in mine as I rubbed them gently.
"I said I'm fine!" Y/n snapped, ripping her hands free.
I let her, my attention fully focused on her as she looked away. Her eyes avoided mine, dragging over the concrete walls.
"From one prison to another," she muttered to herself.
"Love?" I asked quietly, aware that our friends were all watching.
She drifted away, her eyes glazing over until she abruptly snapped back to herself. Still, she refused me meet my eyes, staring at my chest. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to yell at you."
"It's okay," I assured her, opening my arms to invite a hug.
She accepted and let my arms wrap around her. Her body was colder than normal, leading me to press our bodies closer together. Y/n sighed and the tension drained from her body as she sank into me, resting her head on my collarbone.
I pressed a kiss to her forehead. "Come on, let's get some sleep."
I drew back, about to lead her to the bed I'd chosen but she pulled her hand loose.
