Newt's POV

I rode shotgun as we drove towards the mountains. Bertha had turned out to be a working car, effectively cutting down the time it took to reach the mountains to a couple of hours.

I half expected Y/n to burst out of nowhere and slap me out of my miserable state, but she didn't. The empty feeling wrapped itself tight around my heart as I ached and begged the universe to send Y/n back to me. I didn't care if we fought every day for the rest of our lives. I preferred that to this.

In the year we had spent together, we had barely spent more than a couple hours apart. It was agonising being away from her and even more agonising that I didn't know even if she was alive.

Jorge slowed the car down, coming to a stop.

I looked up, noticing the line of cars that stretched across the road and blocked our way.

"Well," Jorge said, peering out the window. "I guess we're on foot."

We all climbed out of the car, grabbing our things and beginning the trek along the ruined road. We passed the ruined cars, looking at them as we passed.

Minho, walking next to me, stopped to check the open boot of a car. It was completely empty, as if someone had looted it, which was likely considering the world. Belongings were of no use to the dead.

A gunshot went off, shattering its back window.

Minho grabbed me, dragging me down as we hid behind one of the cars.

"Hey, is everyone okay?" Thomas's voice called, echoing off the rocking cliffs that the road was pressed against.

"We're fine!" Minho yelled back.

"Does anyone know where those bloody shots came from?" I called.

"Marcus! He led us into an ambush!" Jorge's angry voice sounded closer than Thomas's.

I saw Thomas's head poke up from behind a car then duck again when another gunshot went off. There was a moment of silence, then Jorge's voice.

"Everyone! Get ready to sprint back to the truck! And hold your ears."

Minho and I did as told, clamping out hands over our ears.

Two girls came out of nowhere, pointing shotguns at us.

"Drop it!" the dark skinned girl yelled, her dark braids bouncing slightly as she threatened Thomas. I recognised her voice from over the radio. "Now! I said drop it! On your feet, let's go! You two, over here now!" the girl yelled at Minho and I.

We got up slowly, holding our hands up as we made our way over.

The girl froze. "Aris?"

We all looked at Aris, who looked just as confused as the rest of us.

The girl pulled her mask down and Aris's face lit up.

"Oh my God. Harriet?" Aris stared at them.

The other girl—blonde and shorter—pulled her mask down too. There was something about her that seemed distantly familiar.

"Sonya?"

"What the hell are you doing here?" Harriet demanded.

Aris stumbled forward to hug her, then Sonya.

"Aris, you're lucky we didn't shoot you," Sonya laughed, hugging him tightly.

"How?" Aris asked wonderingly, looking between his friends.

"What's happening?" Thomas asked.

"We were in the Maze together," Aris explained, remembering we were there too.
