Warnings: mentions of murder and death

Nik's POV

"Why the hell would he do that?" I demanded, glaring up at the universe. "Seers don't exist."

Felix sighed, pressing his hand over his eyes. "I'm just telling you what happened. Élliot blackmailed me a few days ago and told me what to say in answer to the questions."

"But how did he know? What the hell does he want with Y/n?"

Felix shrugged. "How would I know?"

"How many abilities does he have?" I asked, beginning to pace.

"Three."

"Emotions..."

"Visions..."

"Shut up, Felix. He's not a seer."

The night was quiet, silent of even crickets. Clouds had washed over the land during the afternoon, coming from the coast. I almost found myself missing the heat of the desert in this cold. Blue lights glowed in the area around us, ensuring we weren't caught off guard by a Crank.

"What's going on? I just put Y/n to bed," Alex said as he joined us.

Felix went over his story again.

"Go back to camp and get some sleep," Alex said and watched him leave.

"I wasn't done with him," I said, turning to face the night.

Alex's hand brushed against mine, shooting a comforting shot of warmth up my arm. I let him take it, my fingers easily intertwining with his calloused ones. We stood together, staring out into the night.

"Y/n has a ninth ability," I said, breaking the silence. "She didn't tell me."

Alex remained quiet, but I knew he was listening to me.

"Élliot can't help us," I whispered.

"What?"

I leaned against his shoulder, grateful that he was taller than me. "Élliot told Felix to tell me that the most he can do is delay but even that is no guarantee because she's not exactly behaving like a normal Corrupt. Obviously, Felix was told something similar. He doesn't suspect much."

He pulled me against him, letting me sink into him.

"We'll figure something out," Alex promised me. "You said something about Denver?"

"Y/n will never go there willingly and I don't have the physical strength to force her to. I could always go by myself and pay Doctor Burford a visit, but that doesn't get her there."

"We can head in Denver's direction and when we get close enough Ember can shut down her abilities. You can knock her out and we'll go to Denver."

I shook my head. "Ember couldn't stop her when she had four, let alone nine."

"So knock her out in her sleep?" Alex suggested.

"It's different when she's not exhausted from taking on a new ability, the Wraith could get in my head."

"And if that happens?"

"I don't know, she's had the chance to use hypnosis on me but hasn't yet. That's probably because I haven't done anything to anger her. Trying to get Y/n to Denver to get her help will anger her. Plus with the stress of being in that city she might even get worse."

Alex drew back an arm length to look at me. "So what do we do?"

"I don't know, Alexander."

He leaned closer until our heads were pressed together. "I'm so sorry, Nik. Is there anything I can do to help you?"
