Warning: Descriptions of blood, death and pain.
Weeks later
We spent time resting, processing the trauma we had both gained from Wicked. Nik opened up, talking about the torture Wicked inflicted on him for information he didn't possess. The people he'd been forced to kill as Coralie controlled him. It broke my heart to know what they did. Wicked's tyranny would end bloodily, the certainty was rooted deep in my mind.
Eventually, we grew too bored and decided that we would soon set out for the Right Arm. For the journey ahead, we began to gather supplies, stocking up on food, water and clothes as we prepared to set out in the desert.
That was how I found myself wandering through the streets with Aaliyah early one afternoon.
The back of my neck pricked uneasily. Someone was watching us. By the time I saw the flash of metal in the air, it was too late to react. It slammed into my shoulder, tearing open my skin with an agonising burn.
I stumbled with a cry, and Aaliyah let out a scream, catching the attention of the crowd. They soon saw the Enhance storming through the crowd towards us and scattered.
"Run!" I ordered Aaliyah and she did.
Lightning crackled in my hand. I would be okay, so long as I didn't take out the metal.
The metal ripped itself from my shoulder, flying back to Austin.
I ripped off my scarf, pressing it to the wound as blood gushed from me. The cloth was quickly soaked through. Tossing lighting at him, I began to sprint in the direction that Aaliyah had vanished.
A woman shoved her way through the crowd of fleeing people. At her command, objects formed in the air, shooting towards me. She could create things I noted as I destroyed them with lightning before turning down a different street.
'Help me,' I begged the Wraith. I knew she could hear me. 'Show them what we're capable of. Make them scared.'
The effect was instant, the world titling violently as I collapsed to my knees. My palms slammed against the cracked tar, catching on sharp stones and beginning to bleed. The world shook violently, either my body or the earth beneath me. Thunderclouds rolled across the sky in a dark mass of illusions. Lightning darted between them, followed immediately by an enormous clap of thunder. Wind whirled through the city, whipping up dust and rubbish high into the growing expanse of darkness.
The sky opened and rain came pouring down. People yelled out in shock at first, then joy. People flooded onto the streets, looking up as the first rain years fell. Some of the younger ones opened their mouths, trying to catch the droplets.
'How's this helping?' I demanded, thoughts slurring as I struggled to my feet.
The Wraith didn't respond.
I dragged a hand through my dry hair—more illusions—continuing my way along. A moment later, someone started screaming, followed by more.
The rain turned a bloody red.
'Dramatic,' I told her.
Metal shot towards my head, giving me a half second to knock it away with a hard gust of wind. Somehow, I found myself running through the emptying streets. Puddles already were forming on the broken pavement, bloody water gathering between the broken tiles. Everything appeared slightly off, the cost of using so much power at once. The clouds bloomed an ugly red. It was as if the sky itself was bleeding.
I had really underestimated The Snake.
I shot lightning over my shoulder and the two people chasing me. I made an illusion of myself, hid and ducked out of the way as my illusion self and the Enhanced ran past. I sent it going, further and further until I made it turn a corner and vanish. The two Enhanced skidded to a stop, looking around.
