SC26 - Truth and Lies
INT. ST. NERO CHAPEL. NIGHT.
Eleanor is lying on her bed, unable to sleep. She glares at the ceiling for a moment before flinging the sheets off and getting up. Quietly she sneaks downstairs, past the room where Zavier and Kayla are sleeping and out of the back door. It is dark outside, so she lights a lamp before walking across the courtyard to the garden and collecting her watering can. Eleanor crouches beside the last flower she planted and uses her ability to channel the water onto it, as she did before.
VOICE: Can't sleep huh?
Eleanor turns to see Kayla leaning against the doorframe. She avoids eye contact and goes back to watering the flowers.
ELEANOR: Of course not.
Kayla walks up behind her, watching her work. There is silence for a few moments as she looks over the garden at all the different plants.
KAYLA: You planted all of these?
ELEANOR: Almost. I spend most of my time here.
KAYLA: It's a beautiful garden. I never got into this kind of thing... Me and Zave, we've always been fighters. But it takes a lot out of you and we don't often get the chance to appreciate the smaller things in life.
Eleanor says nothing. She simply continues to spread the water out among the flowers. Kayla notices this and presses on.
KAYLA: Zavier was only trying to protect you. He might have been under contract but that doesn't mean he doesn't care.
Eleanor stands up and looks at Kayla.
ELEANOR: If he gave a damn, he wouldn't have lied. He should have told me the truth.
She grabs her watering can and walks away. Kayla follows. Eleanor heads toward the kitchen window, where she begins to fill the can at a tap.
KAYLA: He blames himself, you know. Everything you went through. He thinks it was because you met him in the first place.
ELEANOR: Well maybe it is his fault. If he didn't show up here...
KAYLA: If he didn't show up here, Balfor would be on his way to get you right now anyway. Think about it, Eleanor. He risked everything to rescue you from Mayagarde. He trusted you to save me when I was captured. He believes in you. And contract or not, I know he would have done it all regardless.
Eleanor stares at the watering can, saying nothing.
KAYLA: It's just... we have to stick together and none of us want this to be the way things are.
ELEANOR: I didn't want any of this to be the way it is.
KAYLA: But you can't change that.
ELEANOR: Can't I though? Maybe there's another way.
KAYLA: It's safer for everyone if we take up Lyndsar Solis' offer.
ELEANOR: No... So long as I'm with you, none of you are safe.
KAYLA: We need to look out for each other, Eleanor. There's no way we're leaving you alone.
ELEANOR: Well right now I need to be. Goodnight Kayla.
KAYLA: Elle...
Eleanor is silent. Kayla nods reluctantly and heads back inside the building. Eleanor is left staring at her reflection in the water. A single teardrop lands in the can and she closes her eyes. When she opens them again she stares at her reflection with a look of determination.
