SC30 - Insurgent Insecurities

INT. THE PHILOSOPHER LABORATORIES. AFTERNOON.

KAYLA: They did what?!

FREDRICKS: Some of the crew took a crate of weapons and barricaded themselves inside the lab. I don't think they were too happy with our little airship heist...

ELEANOR: Come to think of it, why are you so ok with it? Aren't you with the military?

FREDRICKS: Well we're actually an offshoot of the Mayagarde army. More of a security force employed to protect Emerald Industries. And believe it or not, that means our pay got cut too. I'm a goddamn Commander and I can barely afford to feed myself! I'm lucky I don't have a family but some of the others had to bring theirs on board, with Dr. Adams blessing of course. I gotta admire her bravery but she really does make for a terrible captain.

ZAVIER: You know normally when people don't get paid they just quit.

FREDRICKS: Well some of us are wishing we did. The doc made it sound a lot more... glorious than it actually is. Like a floating city of our own, she said.

KAYLA: I'm starting to get her number. So what's the plan?

FREDRICKS: Well I mean there's not much we can do right now...

KAYLA: I mean the insurgents!

FREDRICKS: Oh right! Well we're gonna bust the door down, if you guys can fire a gun you can help us apprehend them.

KAYLA: Wow. I've never heard such comprehensive tactics.

FREDRICKS: What?

KAYLA: Never mind. Me and Zave have guns. Eleanor, best to wait back here.

ELEANOR: Right. Be careful.

A soldier plants an explosive on the door and everyone ducks behind cover. The explosion tears a hole in the lab entrance and Fredricks rallies his forces into the corridoor. Eleanor waits and eventually the sound of hurried footsteps dissapears. She continues to wait in silence. To pass the time she looks around the room, only to find it of dull and monotonous design.

ELEANOR: Yeesh, this is the least exciting 'most technilogically advanced' airship ever.

Suddenly she hears someone running back up the hallway. Eleanor spins around, expecting one of the soldiers but instead a scientist comes barrelling out of the hole, looking over his shoulder and he collides with her. Eleanor tumbles to the floor and she groans in pain.

ELEANOR: Ow... what the heck?

The scientist pulls himself back up and picks something up off the ground, which Eleanor suddenly realizes is gun. The man points it at her and wipes the sweat from his forehead.

SCIENTIST: Who are you?! You don't look like one of them!

ELEANOR: Whoa, take it easy! I'm one of the good guys.

Eleanor sizes him up. He is a young man, wearing a lab coat and glasses and has short black hair, slicked back but messed up from the fighting. He keeps checking over his shoulder nervously.

ELEANOR: Hang on... I don't think I saw you with the soldiers.

SCIENTIST: I knew it! You're one of them!

More footsteps echo from the labs. The man grabs Eleanor up off the floor and holds her between him and the hallway, pointing the end of his gun at her neck. At that same moment, Fredricks and a handful soldiers re-enter the room.

SCIENTIST: Stop right there! Drop the weapons or I'll shoot!

FREDRICKS: Give it up Voss. Your little insurgence is over.

VOSS: My insurgence!? You're betraying our country! And I still see those weapons!

FREDRICKS: I'm not dropping anything because you're not gonna shoot the girl.

VOSS: Oh yeah?

Voss places the tip of his gun on Eleanor's chin. Eleanor looks at Fredricks desperately.

ELEANOR: How about we compromise and everyone puts their weapons down!

VOSS: Last chance Commander!

Another door opens to Eleanor's right and Vilicia Adams walks into the room.

DR. ADAMS: Doctor Voss! What the hell do you think you're doing?

VOSS: I... I'm trying to knock some sense into you!

Dr. Adams raises an eybrow at him.

DR. ADAMS: Say that again, Robert?

VOSS: I... uhhh...

Dr. Adams calmly walks up to him and stares him in the eye. Voss lets go of Eleanor and looks at his feet. Adams waits patiently for Voss to speak.

VOSS: Sorry boss. I didn't mean... I meant you... I was just...

DR. ADAMS: And who the hell gave you a gun? I bet you didn't even realize the safety was still on?

Voss looks at his gun and Dr. Adams takes the opportunity to punch him square in the face. He remains upright for a moment before toppling backwards, unconcious. Adams straightens her lab coat and looks down at Voss.

DR. ADAMS: Idiot.

She glances at the rooms other occupants who are staring at her in a state of disbelief. She catches Eleanor's eye.

DR. ADAMS: Ah, Ms. Mayne. I've locked in the flight vectors. Meet me in ten minutes on the bridge. Everyone else is dismissed.

And with that she leaves the room. A few moments later, Zavier and Kayla return with the rest of the soldiers and their newfound insurgent prisoners.

ZAVIER: What'd we miss?
