SC61 - Forgive and Forget
EXT. DEMON HOMEWORLD. TIME UNKNOWN.
Eleanor is standing on top of a rise, observing the chaos in the valley below. She turns away from the fleeing demons and looks up at the vortex. A tear runs down her cheek, then her comm crackles to life.
ZAVIER: Elle, come in! Do you read me? Elle, are you there?
She pauses for a moment before speaking calmly into the comm.
ELEANOR: I'm here.
ZAVIER: Thank Haven. Where are you? We're turning around.
ELEANOR: You should go before it's too late.
ZAVIER: Are you joking? We're not leaving you.
ELEANOR: You have to leave me Zave, there's no time left.
ZAVIER: I'm not leaving you here to die!
ELEANOR: Listen to me Zave. If we leave then the demons left here will die. I might be able to save them.
ZAVIER: We came here to stop them Elle, isn't that what we wanted?
ELEANOR: It was, but most of these people are innocent, and with Demencia gone there might be a chance for peace.
ZAVIER: How are you going to save them? If you stay here you'll be swallowed by the vortex!
ELEANOR: No I won't Zave, I'll... I'll be ok. But you have to go.
ZAVIER: Elle...
Kayla's voice cuts in over the comm.
KAYLA: She's right Zave. Some of the team might not make it if we don't get them medical attention soon. We should stay on course.
ZAVIER: But...!
KAYLA: She's made up her mind. I trust her judgment.
ELEANOR: Listen to her Zave. Get yourselves to safety.
Zavier is silent for a moment.
ZAVIER: Dammit! You'd better come back alive, you hear me?
ELEANOR: Don't worry. I'll... see you soon.
Eleanor turns her comm off and lowers her arm. She gazes out at the vortex again. The force is already pulling at her, causing her hair and loose clothing to flutter as though in a gale. She closes her eyes and takes in a deep breath, then opens them again. Gripping the sceptre tightly, she takes a step forward but her wounded leg gives way at last and she crouches down, clutching it with her open hand. Tears well up in her eyes from the pain and she looks up at the sky.
ELEANOR: I won't... let this stop me. I can't let this stop me.
She struggles to her feet again and limps forward slowly, but after a few steps she collapses again. As she makes to stand up again, a shining figure extends a hand to help her. She takes it and is hauled to her feet. Haven looks at her with worry but Eleanor turns away.
ELEANOR: You shouldn't be here.
HAVEN: I thought you could use my help.
ELEANOR: I don't want your help anymore. Not after what you did.
HAVEN: Demencia told you did he?
Eleanor nods. The air around them is misty and the vortex seems to be spinning a lot slower.
ELEANOR: Is this a dream?
HAVEN: I cannot say. You are the one who called me here.
ELEANOR: I didn't call you. I don't ever want to see you again.
HAVEN: You are upset with my decision to close the portal, I understand.
ELEANOR: Of course I'm upset! I looked up to you. I wanted to be like you. But you... what you did was unforgivable. These people are just the same as us, they're running scared and instead of offering them our help, you sealed their fate.
HAVEN: In a perfect world it would have been beneficial to everyone if we had treated for peace, but you must understand that we didn't trust Demencia. We trusted no demon. I closed the portal to save humanity and I do not regret that decision.
ELEANOR: So it's better them than us?
HAVEN: To put it bluntly, yes.
ELEANOR: It doesn't have to be that way. It doesn't have to be us and them. People are people. If you and Demencia had understood that we would never have been fighting to begin with.
HAVEN: Your ideals are admirable but impossible. As long as we have our differences, we will never be able to live in peace.
ELEANOR: You're wrong. Everyone has their differences. You and I are different, yet we share the same world, the same race and even the same blood. Why not the same with them?
HAVEN: So what would you do?
ELEANOR: I'm going to use the sceptre for what it was built for.
HAVEN: If you do that, you'll undo everything I fought for. Think of the peace I brought to our world!
ELEANOR: Peace?! Our world never saw peace. You know what happened after you died? There was another war, a war between humans. And when that war was over there was another and another and another until now at long last, we're at war with the demons again. You brought us no peace.
HAVEN: Then peace is impossible!
ELEANOR: I don't know if peace can be achieved, but that's not what I'm here for. I'm just here to try and save the lives of those people down there in that valley.
HAVEN: So you'd betray our kind to save theirs?
ELEANOR: Maybe you didn't hear me, but in my eyes there is no us and them. Not anymore.
There is a pause where both of them stare at each other angrily, then Haven backs down and sighs.
HAVEN: I can see there is no convincing you to the contrary. Farewell Eleanor Mayne, I hope for all humanities sake you are right.
Haven fades away along with the mist in the air. The vortex is close now, and it roars overhead. The ground splits beneath Eleanor as the valley is slowly pulled apart. She loses her balance and catches herself again, and the portal shard falls from her pocket and lands a few feet away from her. She watches as the glow slowly fades from it's surface.
ELEANOR: I hope they made it.
She looks up at the vortex one last time.
ELEANOR: Guess there's only one thing left to do.
She raises the sceptre in front of her. The ground beneath her tears apart and she is pulled off her feet amongst the debris, into the gaping void.
