SC37 - Grand Theft Sceptre

EXT. ETHOS GRAND CATHEDRAL. MORNING.

The four break off from the parade and slip into the cathedral gardens via the back gate. They hide behind a bush until a patrol passes, then Zavier and Fredricks leap up and approach the guard at the back door.

FREDRICKS: Excuse me sir, my friend here just collapsed in the parade. Could we come inside?

GUARD: I'm sorry, this area is restricted...

Zavier leans against Fredricks for support and pretends to be ill.

ZAVIER: Uuuugh, please I can't bear it! I think I'm gonna be sick.

Zavier leans in towards the guard making retching noises. The guard shuffles uncomfortably.

GUARD: Look I can't...

ZAVIER: Whoooooa!

GUARD: Alright alright, come on there's a bathroom down the hall. Just try not to throw up on me...

The guard escorts Fredricks and Zavier down the hall, Zavier faking retching noises the whole way. Eleanor and Voss use the opportunity to sneak inside. They move silently down a corridoor and turn right into an empty storeroom. Eleanor raises her wrist and speaks into her comm.

ELEANOR: We're in.

Kayla's voice crackles back over the radio.

KAYLA: Roger that. I'll let you know if things start looking dicey out here.

Eleanor lowers her arm and looks around the room. There is nothing of note except for another door at the other end of the room.

VOSS: Now what?

ELEANOR: Watch my back, I'm gonna check up ahead. I'll signal you when it's safe to follow.

Eleanor edges out of the other door and into another corridoor. She swiftly makes her way to the end and dives inside another room just in time to avoid being spotted by a group of passing preists. Once they are gone, she turns to Voss and waves for him to follow. When he arrives, he examines the room.

VOSS: This is just another empty room... do you even have any idea how to find the sceptre?

ELEANOR: We just have to keep looking.

VOSS: The longer we stay here, the more likely we are to get caught! Let's think about this for a moment.

ELEANOR: Fine! Have any ideas where to start know-it-all?

Voss thinks. He pokes his head out into the corridoor and looks around, then quickly retracts it.

VOSS: I think there's a staircase in the next room. If this place has the same design as most cathedrals from it's time period, the best place to keep something hidden would be in the dungeon.

Eleanor stares at him, suprised.

ELEANOR: How do you know that?

VOSS: I do a lot of field research. Plus I studied history, always wanted to be a historian when I was a kid.

ELEANOR: I'm impressed.

Eleanor suddenly realizes what she is saying and her face quickly falls into a frown.

ELEANOR: Don't think I've forgiven you though. Come on, you lead the way.

Voss nods reluctantly and they quietly make their way to the next room. As Voss predicted, there is a staricase at the end of the room. They creep down and emerge in a dark, stone hallway, dimly lit by a couple of torches. Eleanor picks one off the wall to light their way forward.
