CHAPTER 69 (WARNING MENTIONS CHILD ABUSE)
Emile Talts sat across from his niece trying to gasp that his brother had turned out so much like their father's mother. His grandmother was abusive both physically and verbally but when people talked to her, they would think that she was the kindest loving mother in the world. When she had to take them to the doctor for an injury she had caused, the woman would cry and act completely distraught that something bad would her child. No one ever knew.
Their grandfather was a weak selfish man that was abused by his wife as well. She would scream and yell insults and threats at him and he would just sit there and take it. Then after all that screaming it's a light switch would flip and then she would sweetly say, "Pass the sugar, please."
Emile was a child and he thought that was the craziest thing he had ever seen in his life and it happened all the time. She hated every one of her children and even their father who was her "favorite" suffered a shit ton of abuse. Every time they would go to visit, his grandmother would smirk and giggle then comment on how "spoiled" her children were.
When Mona had come to stay with him for a short while. Ernest had talked about her like a loving father who was concerned about his child's shyness and how he couldn't bring himself to make her stop eating and gaining weight instead of train. Emile thought through the conversation carefully and then realized that Ernest was using a lot of the same cues their grandmother used in conversations. It made him feel sick that he hadn't realized sooner. He had assumed that the girl was lazy and didn't give her much thought but told she go train with the others. She didn't protest and did what she was told.
Their father loved his children and was the best dad they could ever dream to have. He loved and put their happiness first as if to make up for the shitty childhood he had been given. But it's like a curse that came back or never truly left. Emile learned to be a good father from his dad and it never occurred to him that Ernest would be any different.
"I think you should head to the Indigo Sky pack now." Emile said to Mona.
"She stays with me." Dameon said firmly.
"It's dangerous here. We're in a war."
"And if she leaves my side then she'll be completely unprotected from her psychotic parents."
"I'll give her my protection."
"Your protection didn't do shit since she went back home and was going to be forced into marriage and breeding."
"I didn't know!"
Both men glared at each other.
"I'm going to stay." Mona said drawing the men's attention. "If this war is going to be as bad as they say then we must do all that we can to stop it. I have no scent and I'm quiet. Both are useful when trying to sneak up on the enemy."
Dameon immediately protested, "You're staying in the tent."
"You don't get to tell me what to do."
"I'm your boss so yes I do!"
Mona stood and started to leave when Dameon reach out and grabbed her hand. It was the first time they had ever physically touched. Dameon immediately dropped her hand in shock as the telltale sparks danced across their skin. Mona stiffened and quickly departed. Dameon sat there stunned as Emile continued to talk, unaware of the brief yet significant occurrence that had just taken place.
The world felt a million miles away and his wolf was giving him a headache with a bunch of excited howls and gibberish that Dameon could not make out. Feeling faint, Dameon stood abruptly, blindly thanked Emile for dinner, and left.
"But this is your tent!" The Indigo Sky's beta called after him.
---------------------
"SHUT UP!" Asya screamed at the tent next to theirs. The moaning and groaning continued and the fiery fox was completely fed up.
Night chuckled. "I told you that pitching our tent so close to your brother's was a bad idea."
Aysa was pissed and started gathering her stuff.
"Hang on baby." Night said stopping her. "Lucy will be coming around to check on everyone and she'll be able to put a silencing spell on their tent."
Asya looked torn but finally relented. She had been practicing magic more and more to help improve her stamina for wielding the Ebony Sword. A silencing spell wasn't one, she was familiar with. Hoping that Lucy would come soon, she leaned back against Night's chest.
While out on their mini "vacation" they really sat down and talked about what happened. Asya opened up about her trauma while Night honestly told her what happened that night and everything that had happened after. Both cried for themselves and each other.
They talked about the future and Ander, Night's son. Aysa's heart broke for the little boy who had been abandoned by both his parents and she and her fox were outright mad at Night for being so irresponsible. Night had three broken ribs, a black eye, and slight concussion by the time Aysa finally stopped beating him up for being a neglectful father.
Night didn't have any doubt that she would love Ander as much as he did now. She was already protective of him. As hesitant as Asya had been over becoming a mother to another woman's child. She and her fox were acting like more of a true mother than the boy's mother ever had. Asya promised herself to spend more time with him when he awakened from the spell.
The pair hadn't been physically intimate since Night had figured out that Asya had been using sex with him as a way to please Dameon who was trying to help her recover. Asya had been in an awful mental state and Dameon helped bring her back little by little. She had fallen in love with the Rogue King despite his clear rejections for anything more than a therapist/patient like relationship.
Night and Asya's relationship now was more like it had been before they physically mated. They would hug and hold hands, maybe a peck on the lips but nothing more. They were getting to know each other all over again from scratch. They reacquainted themselves with who they were as individuals and also how they've changed.
Because of her experience, Asya can't stand for anything to be around her neck or wrists, like a choker or bracelet, because it sends her into a panic. Night avoids all alcohol and drugs, even medications like aspirin for headaches. He doesn't feel the urge to consume either but the guilt and bad memories leave him cold and depressed.
Their relationship was still haunted by the past and threw shadows on the future but right now, they were trying to make a start to begin a new life together.
==================================
AAAAHHHH! Dameon knows! Yikes! I wonder what's going to happen next? He doesn't really have the best track record for keeping mates... as to what happens... I actually wrote the "end" scene for Mona in the last book. I really didn't know anything about her when I wrote it. To die or not to die? That's still in question actually.
