CHAPTER 70

Westley Garner sat on a log watching as Alec added more wood to the fire. They were set slightly apart from everyone else. Lucy, whose tent was nearby, had left with her Soulmate to check on everyone in the camp. A young vampire girl, Skylar, and a werewolf, Lee, sat on another log nearby.

"The wood won't last the night." The girl said in a soft voice.

"I get some." Lee said but was waved back to his seat by the Born Hunter.

"I'll go." Alec said standing. "Just watch him for me. I need to stretch my legs."

"Of course." The werewolf agreed settling back down as Alec left the area.

"I'm a werewolf hunter." Westley said tauntingly. "Really think you could take me in a fight?"

"Not interested in finding out." Lee said ignoring the other man's desire to start scrimmage.

Things were quiet for a while before Skylar spoke while staring at the fire. "You're going to die tomorrow but then again love is more powerful than all the wealth in the world. With love always comes sacrifice."

"Which of us are you talking too?" Lee asked.

"Do you know why seers always speak in riddles?" she asked instead.

"No, why?"

"Because whenever someone tries to avoid destiny, they run right into it and make a mess along the way. Most of the time, their flailing ruins someone else's life. For example, that stupid seer way back when told Melanie the truth and then fox shifters were hunted to the point of near extinction. Men, women, children, and infants were all slaughtered. After all that death, Melanie's fate has not changed."

"So, I'm going to die?" Lee asked but was only met with silence.

Tears sprang to his eyes and he quickly wiped them away. He had hoped that he would get to see his mates again but was at peace knowing that they were safe and that he was doing everything he could to protect them. It took a minute, for Lee to calm himself and he thought of what would happen with this war. They needed all the allies they could get.

"You should join us." Lee told the hunter.

"Why would I join a 'dead man walking?'" Wes asked mockingly. "If your side was so great then my father would have joined it already. But he's on his way here to meet up with your enemies with back up. You and all of your camp is going to die. We have over 2,000 hunters."

"1,418." Skylar interjected.

"What?"

"1,418. No make that 1,417 that will be joining the other side tomorrow. With only 50 guards manning the security, the Cradle of Life will be taken and torn apart. The hidden horrors will be revealed and the executions will take days to complete." Skylar said.

"What hidden horrors?" Wes asked.

"There is a facility where infants are experimented on and often killed. The elderly who become sick, are taken to the hospital there, and are slowly murdered in terrible ways." Skylar whispered and shut her eyes as if to block out the horrific scenes in her mind.

"I know every inch of-"

"Your father told you that it was a greenhouse for rare botanicals and that no one could go in there for fear of contamination."

Wes was silent as he digested the information.

Alec came back with more wood and Lee excused himself to call his mates. Skylar also left to go to bed.
