The call of a rain crow signaled the promise of an impending storm. Lazy grey clouds rolled in without pressing urgency. Tracy Mason watched the world outside of the window as the passed by. Lost in his own thoughts, Jonathan Mason drove down the highway quietly. He had trained his entire life to be an Alpha and care for his pack. Though the title had been passed down to his younger brothers, he still thought and planned like the Alpha he was born to be. Being mated to the "Protector" changed many things but Jonathan had no regrets. He loved his mate, his children, and his pack. Today he would fight and win for them.

Going through several possible plans and outcomes, he knew that as soon as they arrive to Cub Creek, he would sit down with his twin brothers, Salim and Dayton. He needed find out what their strategy would be. There was something that bothered Jonathan about security and he requested that LeRoy Faulkins, simply known as "Lee," head the operation for now. The twins felt that it would be too upsetting to Lee's older brother, Toby, if they were just to replace him. So, they told Lee to come in as an assistant and look over everything.

"What are your plans when we arrive?" Jonathan asked.

"The cave is already sealed off so we won't be able see the kids. I'm going to check on Asya, Jessie, Grandpa, and Cotton."

"Jessie is under lockdown too. Salim just told me this morning that she is expecting again. Dayton put Landon on guard duty near the cave to calm his wolf. He refused at first but was told that he would be first on call if we get overwhelmed." Jonathan sighed. His wolf, Eli, never liked the fact that their mate was always on the frontlines of danger.

Sensing his discomfort, Tracy laid her hand on his. She was able to soothe him with her touch. It was an argument that they had had many times before. Tracy understood the wolf's outrage and frustration at not being able to bubble wrap his mate. In the end, they learned to fight together and look out for one another.

"A new baby for the pack's Gamma family will be something to celebrate when things settle down." Tracy said thinking about how necessary it was to give the pack something lighthearted after all this stress. Celebrations always brought them closer together.

"What are your plans?" she asked.

"I need to meet with Salim, Dayton, Reilly, and Lee."

"Is there a reason why the twins haven't offered Lee the full-time position as Beta?" Tracy wondered. "Especially since the back and forth between here and the Sprite Kingdom has been difficult for Reilly, Priscilla, and their children."

Jonathan smiled. "With everything else going on I doubt they have given it much thought. He would be an excellent candidate. They were planning on initiating Calvin and Jenna into the pack."

"Do you think it will cause any problems considering Jenna's relationship with the twins, especially Salim?"

"I hope not. Lee is an excellent choice and as Alphas the good of the pack should come before their personal lives." Jonathan said firmly.

"Easier said than done sometimes. I had to endure a good number of snide comments in the beginning." Tracy pointed out.

Jonathan flinched remembering his past indiscretions before they were fully mated.

"Carrie may not want to have a former lover's mate so closely associated with her mates."

Sighing Jonathan said, "I'll suggest it and if it happens, it happens."

After seeing several familiar landmarks, they knew they were close to home now. Tracy began to wonder what would happen during the course of the day. She wished that she could see the future like Shadow once could. Thinking of the deceased seer, she hoped that the woman's half-vampire child with the same gift as her mother, was alright. She had disappeared along with the girl's uncle, Night. They had briefly stopped by to see Night's sister, Shade, who was still at Midway Pack due to having just given birth to a boy.

"I wonder where Skylar and Night disappeared to?" Tracy wondered.

"Hard to say. Shadow disappeared for what? Five almost six years?"

"I hope they're not gone that long." Tracy said before remembering the box full of letters that Shadow had given Lady Anna before her death. "I wonder which letter from Shadow is up next."

Jonathan shrugged as he pulled into the backroad that led to the border of their pack. Alyssa Hanks stepped from behind a large tree and opened the gate. Alyssa had been a regular pack member when she had met her Omega mate, Lenny. Her family had been against her accepting a low-ranking male but she stubbornly insisted that she would be with him. Lenny fought against her older brother to prove himself worthy and won. Unfortunately, Lenny was later killed in battle defending their pack from Prince Grim's attack.

Alyssa joined Omega training and had become one of the best archers and marksman in the pack. She was also surprisingly good at developing strategies.

Jonathan stopped and rolled down the window. "Alyssa, we're having a meeting to plan out defense. I would like your opinion."

Her eyes shone brightly with pride, "Of course. I'll ask someone to take over for me."

Tracy grinned at Jonathan as they drove away. "You read my mind. I was going to ask her to come."

Jonathan placed a kiss on the back of her hand. "Great minds think alike. When you see Asya please tell her to join us as well."

The last scene was just thrown otherwise it would have been a pretty boring chapter. The sucky-est part of starting the continuation of another book is that you basically have to reintroduce everyone along with their backstories. I feel like half of each new book in this series is a book report on the previous books.
