STUDENTS CHATTER ALL AROUND ME AS THEY EAT IN THE GREAT HALL. I'm not hungry, I never am now. "Good evening, children." Dumbledore calls out and I turn my attention to him. The students quiet.
"Now, we have two changes in staffing this year. We're pleased to welcome back Professor Grubbly-Plank, who will be taking care of Magical Creatures while Professor Hagrid is on temporary leave." I frown at his words and my eyes flicker to the teacher.
"We also wish to welcome our new Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher, Professor Delores Umbridge." My eyes trail over to a woman tressed in pink sitting at the teachers table. She lets out a slight squeak/hum with a large false smile on her face. "I'm sure you'll all join me in wishing the professor good luck." Dumbledore finishes before taking in a breath. My eyes move back to him.
"As usual, our caretaker, Mr. Filch, has asked me to remind you-" the teacher dressed in pink clears her throat with a high pitch hum. Everyone turns to look at her, confused as to why she interrupted, including Dumbledore. She takes excruciatingly long to stand and Harry leans towards me and whispers in my ear.
"She was at my hearing," the hairs on the back of my neck stand up as my heart beat quickens. "She works for Fudge." He finishes and moves back. I twist the rings on my fingers. Professor Pink-y walks over to Dumbledore and stands beside him.
"Thank you, Headmaster, for those kind words of welcome." She clasps her hands together and smiles at us students. "And how lovely to see all your bright, happy faces smiling up at me." No one is smiling. "I'm sure we're all going to be very good friends." She smiles out.
"That's likely." The twins mumble under their breath in unison. Professor Umbridge takes in a deep breath before continuing. "The Ministry of Magic has always considered the education of young witches and wizards to be of vital importance." She begins to walk, strolling on the stage.
"Although each headmaster has brought something new to this historic school..." she turns to Dumbledore with a smile who nods his head at her words. "...progress for the sake of progress must be discouraged." Ron pulls a face and I glance at him, who sits opposite me with Hermione beside him.
"Let us preserve what must be preserved, perfect what can be perfected, and prune practices that ought to be..." she lowers her voice to a whisper. "Prohibited." She whispers before chuckling sickly. My heart drops in my stomach and my eyes widen.
She moves back to her seat and Dumbledore claps his hands together, resulting in everyone else doing the same. I clap politely before lowering my hands to my lap with a frown on my face.
"Thank you, Professor Umbridge. That really was most illuminating." Dumbledore calls out causing Ron to snicker. "Illuminating? What a load of waffles." He mumbles under his breath and Dumbledore continues his speech.
"Now, as I was saying,..." Dumbledore starts and Harry leans towards me again. "What does it mean?" He whispers out confused and I take in a breath, spinning the silver ring on my middle finger before moving to the one on my index finger.
"It means the Ministry is interfering at Hogwarts." I can't help but have a bad feeling of what is approaching.
