The sunlight was shifting through the blinds of Draco's room, but Madeline didn't sleep that night. She carefully lifted Draco's arms off her body, and slowly climbed off his bed. She picked up her clothes from the floor and changed, taking her wand out of her pocket.
"Accio letter," She whispered, she waited a minute until she heard the letter sliding under the door, and into her hand. It was in a white little envelope; she had written his name neatly across the envelope. She looked over at where he slept, tears rushing to her eyes, but she blinked them away.
She put the letter on his nightstand, where he would see it, before she leaned down to kiss his cheek, before he turned around, and she ended up kissing his lips. He smiled against her lips, as he opened his eyes.
"What are you doing?" He asked, as she stood up. She looked away from him, clearing her throat.
"You were supposed to be asleep."
"I was, but I heard you moving. Where are you going? We can still get another hour or two of sleep." He said, he laced his fingers with hers, kissing her palm, before looking over at his nightstand, where the letter sat.
"What's this?" He asked,
"You were supposed to be asleep; you were supposed to read that when I left."
"What are you talking about?" He whispered.
"I... we...I have to end..." She could barely get the words out before tears started pooling in her eyes. Draco ripped open the letter, his eyes scanning it, before looking up at her his eyebrows scrunched up confused, his mouth slightly parted.
"You...you're ending things?"
"Draco listen-"
"Listen to what! You want to break up with me?" Draco yelled, throwing the covers off himself, and standing up.
"I don't want too! The letter!"
"I don't want to read it from the letter! I want to hear your explanation from you!" He shouted, pointing an angry finger at Madeline. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to ignore the heartbroken glare he was giving her.
"Last year's Christmas party...Alexander, he told me that him and I are engaged. We've been engaged since we were eleven, and my father is forcing me to end things with you."
"You're...engaged." Draco whispered, every single word was a stab in his heart, he could feel them pulling the knife out, and stabbing him again and again.
"I didn't know!"
"End the engagement! Just end it! I don't understand!"
"I can't! This is out of my hands Draco!"
"It's your life! You don't even want this." Draco shouted, throwing the letter on the nightstand. Madeline shut her eyes, shaking her head.
"It doesn't matter what I want, this is my life. I thought...I thought I'd marry you but that's not how this works. It's not how my life works." Madeline muttered,
"Madeline...I love you. I survived being a death eater, survived a war, waited till I can be with you again but now you're saying that can't even happen?" He asked, Madeline shook her head.
"Please don't say that, please, you have no idea how hard this has been for me-"
"For you! You're the one breaking my heart here!"
"I'm the one who's going to be married! You can move on, fall in love again! God, why didn't you stay asleep!" She sobbed out, Draco's adam's apple bobbed, before he swallowed the lump in his throat.
"Stop saying you wished I was asleep! You were going to leave me in a letter!" He said, throwing the letter on the bed.
"I couldn't face you and see this look on your face! I wanted to avoid this, but Draco you can fall in love with someone else...be happy with someone who you can actually marry and love you the way you deserve."
"How can you say that to me? You are the only girl that I will ever love, I don't know how to survive in a world where you aren't with me. I love you."
"Stop loving me. That's all you can do." The door opened but they didn't even hear it.
"Madeline? Draco? What's going on?" Daphne asked, but they didn't look away from each other.
"Ask Madeline, she's the one breaking us up." Draco said, Madeline shaking her head, as she looked at the door, Daphne, Blaise, and Theo stood there in there pajamas looking between them.
"I'm engaged to Prince Alexander." Draco turned around opening his dresser, he put on a sweater, before taking out a suitcase.
"Draco what are you doing?" Theo asked,
"I'm leaving."
"Where are you going?"
"I can't stay here."
"Draco, please. You can't leave like this. You're still upset-" Madeline said, she walked up to him putting her hand on his arm, but Draco moved away, and Madeline didn't know what was worse the breakup or him flinching away from her.
"Listen mate, let's all calm down-" Blaise said,
"No! I need to leave now." He shoved all of his clothes in the suitcase and zipped it shut. He grabbed the first pair of shoes he saw and stormed out of the room.
"Wait! Draco!" Blaise shouted, as he and Theo ran out after him.
Madeline covered her mouth with her hand as she felt her whole body shaking, she choked out a sob, falling to the ground, she wrapped one arm around her body.
"Madeline," Daphne breathed, she kneeled next to Madeline wrapping her arms around her. Madeline leaned into her, crying into her shoulder.
"I didn't want too. I didn't want too."
"I know, love. I know."
