The next morning after they were cleared for classes to begin, Madeline, Draco, Theo, and Blaise headed to potions while Daphne went to Herbology. They walked into the potions classroom it was the same, but it felt different now that Snape wasn't teaching in it. They sat down at the same table, glancing over at the four cauldrons Slughorn had set up. Madeline shut her eyes, the scent of Draco's cologne, filled her nostrils.
"Draco, why is your cologne so strong? I've been smelling it since we got here." Madeline asked,
"What are you talking about? Your perfume is the one that's strong." Draco said, Madeline shook her head, she wasn't wearing any perfume that morning. Draco closed his eyes, the secant filling his head leaving him with a content feeling in his stomach.
"I'm not wearing any today,"
"I don't smell anything; you guys are all messed up." Blaise said,
"I smell Daphne, I don't know why, she's not even here." Theo said, his eyebrows scrunched up confused as Slughorn walked into the classroom.
"Now then, now then, now then. Scales out, everyone, and potion kits, and don't forget your copies of Advanced Potion-Making..." Slughorn said.
"Sir!" Harry Potter said, raising his hand. They didn't notice him walking in after being so distracted from the smell filing their heads.
"Harry m'boy?" Slughorn nodded.
"I haven't got a book or scales or anything — nor's Ron —we didn't realize we'd be able to do the N.E.W.T., you see —" Potter explained,
"Ah, yes, Professor McGonagall did mention...not to worry, my dear boy, not to worry at all. You can use ingredients from the store cupboard today, and I'm sure we can lend you some scales, and we've got a small stock of old books here, they'll do until you can write to Flourish and Blotts..." Slughorn strolled over to a large cupboard and pulled out two raggedy textbooks. He handed them to Potter and Weasley before starting his lesson.
He talked about the three potions that he had made, the first was Veritaserum, the truth potion, the second, Polyjuice Potion, which can transform you into anyone using a sample of there DNA, and the third one, Amortentia, a love potion, one so strong that it can smell like anything or anyone you love. Draco smirked at Madeline looking at Madeline with a knowing gaze.
"Stop looking at me like that, you smelled me too." She said, Draco shrugged.
"But you smelled me, I'm really touched Princess." Madeline chuckled rolling her eyes, as a blush crept up her face.
"You two disgust me, I'd just like you to know that." Blaise said, grinning from ear to ear.
"Sir, you haven't told us what's in this one," Erine Macmillan said, pointing to the smallest cauldron.
"Oho. Yes. That. Well, that one, ladies and gentlemen, is a most curious little potion called Felix Felicis. I take it," Slughorn said, so dramatically that everyone could tell he didn't actually forget the potion. His eyes twinkled excitedly looking at the cauldron.
"That you know what Felix Felicis does, Miss Granger?"
"It's liquid luck," said Hermione excitedly. "It makes you lucky!"
The class sat up straighter, Madeline noticed Draco lean forward in his seat, his eyes burning with interest, his shoulders tense, as Slughorn continued explaining the effects of liquid luck, and explained that the student who recreates it best will win one small bottle of liquid luck.
"Off you go!" Slughorn shouted, clapping his hands together excitedly. Everyone stood up, grabbing their cauldrons, ingredients, and flipping open their textbooks to the correct pages. Madeline concentrated, but as the fumes grew and grew, she started to look worse and worse. Her hair became bigger, her potion almost exploding in her face and trying to leave ash on her face.
"Sir, I think you knew my grandfather, Abraxas Malfoy?" Draco said, as Slughorn walked past their table. He glanced at the cauldrons, examining their progress.
"Yes. I was sorry to hear he had died, although of course it wasn't unexpected, dragon pox at his age..." He walked away before Draco could get another word in. Draco scowled at Slughorns back, before returning to his potion. Madeline looked at him, noticing that the effect of the potion was messing up his hair, and making him look sweaty like the rest of them.
"And time's...up! Stop stirring, please!" Slughorn said, he walked around examining everyone's potions. Madeline's potion was decent, Slughorn stirred it, giving an approving nod, he did the same with the boys before moving to the other students.
"The clear winner! Excellent, excellent, Harry! Good lord, it's clear you've inherited your mother's talent. She was a dab hand at Potions, Lily was! Here you are, then, here you are — one bottle of Felix Felicis, as promised, and use it well!" Slughorn said, the second he glanced at Potter's potion. Madeline and Draco scowled at him, as he was handed the bottle of potion, before they were allowed to leave the Potions classroom.
The walked to the Slytherin common room to meet Daphne, the wall slid open, and they heard Daphne start laughing as they came into view.
"You guys look horrible, what the hell happened?" Daphne asked, as they sat down.
"Liquid luck," Madeline said, trying to smooth her hair down.
"You want a hug, Daphne?" Theo asked, Daphne stood up shaking her head.
"No, Theo. You look disgusting." She said, his hair was sticking up, his face was covered in ash, and he looked sweaty.
"No, no, I think we should hug." Theo said he started walking towards Daphne, but she shook her head, screaming as she ran away from him.
