Sophie placed the snacks on the coffee table as the doorbell rang. She quickly went to go awnser it. Keefe smiled and held up the pillows.
They were having building a pillow fort to have a movie night it. They were going to binge watch all of the Toy Story movies.
By the time the fort was finished being constructed, the door was knocked on for the pizza. They brought it inside, getting their setup ready. Pizza on the coffee table, snacks and popcorn in a bowl in the fort, and Capri suns on the floor by the couch.
Under their blankets, they started the movie. By the second movie, they were both getting squirmy.
Sophie spotted a rogue pillow on Keefe's other side. She started leaning over him to reach for it. His eyebrows shot up, a faint blush was present on his cheeks. The next thing she knew, Keefe had connected their lips together.
She let out an audible squeak. Keefe pulled away at that, startled. The look of confusion on his face melted to hurt when he realized Sophie was holding the pillow that was beside him when she pulled away.
"We're you not...?" He trailed off.
Sophie just shook her head and held up the pillow. She was still shaking and wasn't able to use her words. He really just kissed her. He liked HER. HOW? It was a lot to process.
She should've processed it faster, because Keefe took her reaction the wrong way. He pulled away and got up off the couch.
"S-sorry," he mumbled.
"Wait." Sophie tried to reach out to him, but he was backing away. She scrambled out of the pillow fort, knocking it down in the process. This was much more important.
"N-no. This is my fault. I... I should've known better. And..." He blinked hard. "I was... I was stupid. I-I need to go," Keefe stuttered.
He ran out of the door, slamming it behind in his haiste. Sophie could see his bike going down the road toward his house.
What. Just. Happened.
She sat in the wreckage of the fort, trying to sort things out in her brain. He kissed her. He really kissed her. And...
He thought that she didn't like him back now.
Oh gosh. What did she do.
Her shakes still hadn't calmed down yet. It was getting dark. She couldn't just run off after him now.
Tears threatened to burn her eyes. She really screwed up. Bad.
Edaline wandered into the room. She came and sat next to Sophie on the couch.
"Hey, sweetie. What happened? I heard commotion and then saw Keefe leaving. Did you two have a fight?"
She shook her head before laying it in her hands.
"No," Sophie muttered. "I messed up.
"What did you do?" She brushed the hair away from Sophie's hair.
"I was trying to reach over him for a pillow, and he took that the wrong way, and he kissed me. Then I sat there, like an IDIOT after I screeched, cause I wasn't expecting it, and he pulled away. Then he realized I was trying to get the pillow, and he ran off. And just, AHHHGGGGHHH." She yelled into the pillow.
The stupid pillow that may have just ended their friendship.
"Well," Edaline said gently. She placed her hand on Sophie's knee. "I know it'll be tough to do, but you're going to have to talk things through with him. Even if you don't like him back, you still have something special, and-"
"No!" Sophie cut her off. "That's the issue. I do like him back. And now he thinks I don't." She hugged the pillow.
Edaline's eyebrows rose. She simply stood up, grabbed her keys, and said, "Grab some shoes, I'll meet you in the car."
They made it to Keefe's house in record time. Sophie ran to the door. From where she was standing, she could hear yelling.
'I SAID I'M DOING THE DISHES, MOM.'
'THEN GET OVER HERE AND DO THE DISHES.'
'DAD TOLD ME TO GET THE DOOR.'
'THEN GET THE DOOR.'
'HOW CAN I DO THAT AT THE SAME TIME.'
'JUST DO WHAT YOU'RE TOLD FOR ONCE. YOU ALREADY CAME HOME ACTING LIKE A CRYBABY, LEAST YOU CAN DO IS FOLLOW ORDERS. DO YOU WANT ME TO TELL YOUR FATHER THAT YOU'VE BEEN CRYING SINCE YOU GOT HOME.'
Keefe's voice turned small and shaky. 'No. Please don't. I'm getting the door.'
The door swung open. Keefe's red and puffy eyes settled on her. They widened with shock.
"Foster," he mumbled. "Please, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. I was an idiot. Forget it ever happened."
He started to slide back into the house. She could see Ro lurking in the background, staring intently at her. Maybe even a little hostile.
Sophie grabbed his arm to stop him. "Keefe," she tried.
"No. Please forget it happened," he begged. Tears were starting to form in his eyes again.
It was evident he wasn't going to hear her out. She decided to take drastic measures.
She grabbed his other arm, and pulled him close to her. She pressed her lips to his. He sucked in a breath, but stayed where he was.
Sophie let go of his arms to let him bring a hand up to tangle in her hair, the other at her waist. She placed one hand on his shoulder, and one gently cupping the side of his neck.
Her heart was racing in the best way. She was nervous as crap, but with the way Keefe held onto her, it melted the worries she had about this.
When they finally pulled away, Sophie said, "Ready to listen to me now?"
Keefe nodded.
