Seventh grade:

Sophie wound around the horde in the lunch room. She was trying to meet Keefe by the water fountain. She hadn't seen him all summer, between him on vacation, school shopping, and his jet lag, this was their first time seeing each other in three months.

He wasn't there by the time she made it there, so she waited. He must not be let out of class yet.

She felt a tap on her shoulder a few minutes later. She turned to not be face to face with Keefe.

She crained her neck to see him looking down at her. She felt her jaw go slack. Not only did he get taller, his shoulders were broader, and his jaw was more defined.

He looked... good.

She didn't realize she was looking him up and down until he blushed and turned away.

"Oh, yeah. I had a growth spurt," he mumbled.

"Spurt?" Sophie clarified. "That's a whole darn geyser!"

Keefe laughed at that. "I had to get a whole new wardrobe for school. There's no way those shorts would've in dress code."

"No kidding. Are you as tall as Ro now?"

He snorted. "Taller. And she's SO mad about it. We realized as we were on a boat and she tried to use my head as an armrest, and she realized she couldn't anymore."

"I'd be careful." Sophie pointed at his legs. "She might try to take off a few inches."

"Oh, trust me. I've been sleeping with one eye open." She laughed.

"I'm glad you're back." She leaned in and hugged him.

"Me too, Foster," he murmured. "That reminds me. I got you something." He pulled out a box.

"You didn't have to do that," Sophie told him as she took the box from him.

Keefe rubbed the back of his neck. "I know. But I saw it and thought of you. I can come over after school, and we can go get it put on."

She opened the box box to see a beautiful shell shaped charm for her bracelet. She gave him a soft smile. "That'd be great."

His smile almost looked relieved. He looked around before turning back to Sophie. "Everyone's already at the table. Let's go."

Sophie followed. They sat down beside each other after going through the line. Everyone turned to them.

"Glad to have you back!" Dex said to Keefe.

"Glad to be back." He let out a sigh. "I don't know how much longer I could take of my parents before I went legit insane."

The only thing that would've completed the awkward silence would've been crickets in the background.

Keefe shrugged and took another bite of food, "But it's fine. Nothing you can do about, y'know."

"Are you alright?" Linh asked

"Yeah, just glad I can go back to hiding out in my room. They were being so pushy and snobby, but hey, what's new."

Sophie took his hand and squeezed it.

Ok another question 😅

I've had a nickname in y head for Sophie to call Keefe for a while (not in cannon bur for fanfics and stuff)

And in my head it's so freaking cute in a baby voice cause that's how imagine her saying it
But writing it out it sounds kinda cringe

But the nickname is "Bub"

Like in my head I love it but I don't think it gives the same affect written out

It wouldn't be used for a while but would it be cute or does it seem cringe 😅
