Anyone else know this song 😅
Sophie walked into the kitchen to smell the turkey in the oven. She came up behind Edaline and tapped her shoulder. She turned around.
"Can I help?" Sophie asked.
"Sure!" Edaline directed her to the corn.
She pulled up a chair by the trash can. Taking the ears of corn, she started to shuck off the husks.
Sophie could hear the door open. It was Grady coming back inside from mowing the lawn. She saw him through the door, setting up in the dining room. Extended family would be over soon for Thanksgiving.
Once done with the corn, she joined Grady. She had toted in the silverware with her and started to place it at the table.
He smiled and kissed the top of her head when he walked by her. Together, they finished cleaning up the living room in time to help Edaline pull the food out of the oven.
Soon, family was starting to arrive. Sophie hid back in a corner while people started to flood the house. She only saw these people once a year–twice–at most.
Plus, with her being adopted, she sometimes felt she didn't belong. None of her extended family treated her any different, but she couldn't help feeling out of place. Especially whenever Jolie was mentioned.
Not to mention, none of her cousins were her age. Most of them were quite a bit older than her. Therefore, not many shared interests.
The two or three that weren't older than her were either in elementary or early middle school. The same problem still applied.
Because of all those factors together, she usually stayed mostly quiet at the table unless directly spoken to. Occasionally, she'd chime into the conversation, but family knew her to mostly stay to herself.
Sophie was zoning out as the adults talked about boring stuff they'd heard on the news. She snapped back to reality when her phone pinged. It was a text message from Keefe.
'Been able to slip out of "family dinner". Would it be alright if I came over?'
She glanced at her mom. They'd been including him since at least fifth grade for the times he was able to get away. They knew the drill
Edaline already knew the look Sophie gave. She gave a thumbs up in return.
Sophie quickly texted Keefe back.
'Up! You can head over.'
She suffered through around twenty more minutes of the boring adult blabber before the doorbell rang.
Keefe was let in. He waved at her family members before pulling a chair up next to her. She grinned, glad to finally have some company.
"Everything alright with your house," Sophie had to ask him.
His smile faded a little. He shrugged. "I mean, it's Thanksgiving with my family. What else to expect."
Her gaze softened. She squeezed his hand a little tighter.
"But!" Keefe's face brightened up. "Bo's parents joined in this year. They kept pestering Bo and Ro about if they were planning to have kids." The glee in his eyes melted away the pain from moments earlier.
"THAT was a fun conversation to egg on. Thought Ro was about to smack me!" He snickered
Sophie had to let herself laugh at that. Considering the wedding, she had no doubt about that.
She leaned her head on his shoulder. They were planning to get up a little earlier, but the drama regarding the adults were starting to get interesting.
Apparently, Grandma had hidden her lock box of money, but then it went missing. The only other person who had been around it was one of Sophie's cousins.
When the arguing turned to shouting, Sophie figured it was time to head outside on the porch. Keefe was starting to get tense. She knew from what he had told her before that Thanksgivings at his house got heated fast. It was one of the reasons he'd escape to her house. She didn't want him to be stuck in that
When they got into the fresh air, she saw him relax. They settled onto the porch swing. Keefe pushed off with his foot to rock them. Sophie nuzzled herself under his arm. He held her close.
The two of them stayed seated on the bench, forgetting about the rest of the world. The breeze blew through her hair and made goosebumps erupt on her arms. Even with the chills, she was probably the most comfortable she had been in a while.
