Eighth Grade:

Sophie licked the ice cream that was melting down her hand. Sophie, her parents, and Keefe were at the board walk. Her parents had brought them as a treat for the both of them getting all As for the first nine weeks.

Her parents were on the bench while her and Keefe sat at the edge of the dock. Their legs were dangling off the side.

"I kinda want to shove you into the water," Keefe mused.

"Do it," Sophie started. "And you're getting dragged in with me."

He smirked at her. "That might just be worth it."

She raised her eyebrows at him. "Don't make me shove you in first, buddy. You know I'd do it."

"Hey," he pouted. "At least let me finish my ice cream cone!"

"Alright then. Don't push me in."

He laughed and went back to starting out at the water. He wrapped an arm around her. Sophie's cheeks heated. She leaned her head on his shoulder to hide her red face.

Keefe started humming along to the guitarist at the corner. He took a big breath before taking his arm back so he could face her.

"Hey, Sophie," he murmured. "Um... I need to talk to you about something."

"Sure." She pulled her legs into crisscrosses. "What is it?"

"I don't really know how to say it."

"That's ok. Take your time."

He went back to stare at the water. The sun was beginning to set. It was beautiful. The vibrant colors shimmered and reflected off the water.

After several minutes, he turned back to her again. "Sophie, I..."

He trailed off when he met her eyes. Sophie tilted her head in confusion.

"Ne-nevermind," Keefe stuttered. "It's not that important.

"Oh..." Sophie said softly. "Alright then."

She grabbed his hand. The silence between them went from comforting to tense. She wished he would tell her. But she didn’t want to push him.

"Time to go, Kiddos," Grady called from the bench.

Sophie and Keefe followed him. She was still holding his hand, but his grip seemed more tentative than usual.

As they were entering the parking lot, Keefe pointed to the restroom sign. "Going to the bathroom. Be right back."

Sophie let go of his hand. Edaline slowed her pace, letting Grady take the lead to the car.

Edaline gave a goofy grin. "So... what happened between you to earlier?"

Sophie tilted her head. "Nothing happened."

"You're sure?"

She nodded. "He said he needed to tell me something, then changed his mind."

Edaline let out a sigh. "Alright then." She picked her pace back up again.

She waited for Keefe. When he got back, he seemed distracted.

"You alright?" She asked him.

He seemed to snap back into reality for a moment to respond. "Yeah. I'm fine. Just got stuff on my mind."

"Is it about earlier?"

His eyes shifted, which made it hard to believe him when he shook his head. She dropped it.

They followed Sophie's parents into the car and drove away.
