Sophie carefully opened the door to the hospital. When she entered the room, Keefe turned to look at her.
"Hey," he mumbled.
She crossed the room to sit on the edge of the bed. She squeezed his arm.
"Hey. How have you been feeling?"
He shrugged. "I've been better."
"I bet." She leaned in and kissed him. "But I sure am glad you're awake."
Keefe stared at his lap. She noticed he had his sketchbook. A scene was just starting to be sketched out.
"Been drawing?" She asked
"Been trying to. My hands are really shaky right now, and I've been really exhausted."
Her gaze softened. He leaned back against his pillows. His brows crinkled together before covering his face with his hands.
"Keefe, I..." She trailed off.
Was she really about to tell him she loved him? No, she couldn't. What if he didn't feel the same way back? Then she'd make a fool of herself.
She settled for pulling him into a hug instead.
"Sophie," his muffled voice came out."
"Yeah?"
"Surgery is this Friday."
"Surgery?" Sophie tried to pretend to sound surprised.
She must've not done done a good job because Keefe pulled away and said, "Ro already told me you know. You don't have to fake that you don't."
Sophie dropped the act. Instead, she asked, "How are you dealing with it?
He looked up at her. His eyes were filled with unshed tears. "I'm worried," he admitted.
Her heart shattered, and she took his hands. "Hey. I'm going to be there when you go under, and I'll make sure the doctors take care of you. Ok?"
He nodded, but the look in his eyes said he didn't quite believe it.
