At the end of the summer, it was time for Sophie to go home.
There were only two weeks before school started. She needed to get her supplies and clothes. But she didn't want the leave.
"Why can't he leave with us?" Sophie asked her parents while hugging Keefe.
"Honey, he still needs to stay for another week," Edaline told her. She tried to grab her hand and tug her forward, but Sophie wouldn't budge. "Come on. You can't stay here forever."
She crossed her arms, "Why not?"
"Don't you want to go home?"
She did want to go home. The constant monitoring by strangers drove her crazy. But Keefe saying, "Please don't go," with tear filled eyes, had her throwing her arms around him again and shaking her head.
"We'll try to set up play dates for you," she tried to convince them.
But Sophie heard Grady in the background talking to Elwin. Something about Keefe's parents never stopping by long enough to get their number. She knew that there was a slim chance of it happening.
Grady in the corner sighed. He plastered a smile on his face and walked back to the kids. "Come on, Kiddo. It's time to go." He started to lead her away. Keefe hugged her before she got a foot away.
"Don't go. I don't want to be lonely again," he cried.
"I don't want to leave either," Sophie murmured.
When they finally pulled away, Grady led her to the door. "Bye," she told Keefe.
"Bye," he murmured back. "Will I see you again?"
"I hope so." Tears fell down her face. Edaline picked her up before she could run to him again. They left to the front desk to check out.
Back in the car, she was strapped into her car seat. Edaline asked if she wanted McDonald's on the way home for dinner. She shook her head.
Grady and Edaline looked at each other. Edaline turned around in her seat to say, "Come on. We can get an ice cream."
"I don't want it." Sophie layed her head on the window.
When they got home, it was already eight. Sophie got changed into her pajamas. When she went to bed later that night, she found it hard to fall asleep. The sound of Keefe's snores and oxygen calmed her. It was weird just trying to sleep in dead silence.
She crawled out of bed and opened her parents' door. "I can't sleep." She rubbed her eyes.
"Come here," Grady murmured, waving her into the bed.
She climbed into the bed with her parents, nestling between the two. Even with her parents there and back rubs and white noise, it still took her until one in the morning to fall asleep.
