Sophie wrapped her arms around Keefe from behind. She nuzzled his back. When he turned around, he looked extremely unhappy.

"What's wrong with you," she asked.

He shut his locker with more force than necessary. "I suck at baseball!"

Sophie frowned. "What are you talking about? I've seen you play before."

"Yeah, but that was before the stupid heart attack. I couldn't even throw the darn ball at practice yesterday!"

"Oh, Keefe," she cooed. "Don't be so hard on yourself. You haven't played in over a year. You just need to practice again."

"That still doesn't change the fact that I was nominated as the team captain now that Fitz graduated. We're going to look like a joke if I can't even throw the ball." He covered his face with his hands.

She pursed her lips. She placed a hand on his arm. "They still nominated you, though," she tried to reason. "They must believe in you enough for that."

He shrugged. "I don't know. I'm supposed to be the one to call out the warm-ups, but I can barely make it through them myself. What kind of example is that?"

"That you're trying your hardest." She peeled his hands away from his eyes. "Persistence is what that shows. Alright?"

"I guess," he mumbled.

Sophie hugged him. She situated her head against his chest to hear his heart beating. She felt it against her cheek. It was a gentle comfort to her that he was ok.

They walked through the mall with each other. They came up to the small cafe in the food court they knew well.

"Hey Wylie," Sophie greeted.

"Hey guys," he shuffled around to find his notepad. "Want your normals?"

"Yes, please," she said.

"You got it."

They took their seat when they got their coffee and small cake slice to share. She leaned her head on Keefe's shoulder.

"So, have you applied to the university yet," he asked.

"I have. What about you?"

"Not yet. I plan to this weekend."

"Think everyone will make it in," she had to wonder.

"I hope so. It would be awesome if we all could be together."

She giggled. "Well we'll find out soon."
