(Four years later)

"Keefe!" Sophie shouted to the other room. "Do you have Calla?"

A worrying pause. "I thought you had her."

She sucked in a breath and rushed to the other room. She sighed when she saw Keefe smirking at her. The little baby girl was asleep over his shoulder, sucking on her binky.

"Don't scare me like that!" She scolded and slapped his arm.

His smile turned guilty. "I'm sorry, I won't do it again."

They had gotten married a little over three years ago. Nine months ago, they had welcomed their little girl, Calla, into the world. She was named after Sophie's grandmother.

Much to both of their reliefs, she had turned out perfectly healthy. Their main concern was her inheriting one, or both, of their medical conditions.

Speaking of. Thankfully, no further issues arose with Keefe's heart. They had a scare, however, about a year ago when he got real lightheaded and nearly passed out while at the gym. Thankfully, it was nothing to worry about. He just overworked himself and didn't stay hydrated enough.

Sophie, meanwhile, still had her seizures. They fluctuated over the years. They had gotten their worst soon after Calla was born. Several of them a day. It was determined to be because of her hormonal level being off the charts. They settled down after a couple of months, much to her relief.

The both of them had gotten into the habit of visiting the children's hospital they had met at. They would bring by little hats Sophie sewed for the NICU babies and art kits Keefe would put together for the kids. They would also bring snacks and drinks for the nurses. They tried to go once every two weeks.

Today was visiting day.

The car was loaded up, and they went out to the hospital. When arriving, they gave the box of hats to one of the nurses. The art kits would be brought to the play room. They hand delivered the snacks, however. It was an excuse to see their favorite nurse.

"Hey guys!" Elwin greeted them. "Welcome back."

Keefe tried to give the box to Elwin, but Elwin turned straight to Sophie and held his hands out. Sophie laughed but handed the baby, who was now wide awake, over.

"Wow," Keefe said. "What am I, chopped liver?"

"Yes," he simply responded.

Keefe feigned hurt. "Wow. Rude."

Calla giggled at her daddy.

They started to make their way down to the activity room to deliver the art kits. Keefe paused suddenly. Sophie followed his gaze to what he was looking at.

He was staring into one of the rooms through the window. She understood what he was looking at. Although she wasn't sure why.

A brown, curly headed girl was lying in the hospital bed. She looked tired, fighting against sleep. The blonde boy sitting beside her had a small smile on his face. He brushed the hair back on her head. They couldn't have been any older than fifteen or sixteen.

"They look familiar, don't they," Keefe murmured.

"They do," Sophie agreed. She hiked Calla up higher on her hip. "But from where?"

"Not sure."

When Elwin passed by, Keefe asked, "What's going on in there?" He gestured to the room in front of them.

"Oh," he said," she just got a colostomy removed. Had it since she was five."

Sophie snapped her gaze to Keefe the exact moment he did her. They realized. Elwin had walked off, but the unspoken discovery still reverberated through the air.

It was Amy and John from when Keefe had the heart attack.

Sophie eventually had to chuckle at it all. "So I guess they did stay friends."

Keefe wrapped an arm around her. "Looks like it could have strayed a bit further."

"Yeah."

She leaned her head against him. She closed her eyes and listened to the gentle thumping of his heart. She was so grateful that she had gotten the opportunity to meet him. He made her life thousands of times better. She couldn't imagine what life would be like without him.

Sophie looked up at him, Keefe looking down. He leaned down and kissed her, long and slow.

It's a good thing she never would.
