Sophie rode up the elevator of the hospital. She counted the number of floors before finally stopping on the third one.

She took a moment to collect herself before opening the door to Keefe's room. Not much had changed since the day before. She honestly really wasn't sure what she was expecting.

Keefe was still asleep. Still in the same position as before. Still hooked up to an abundance of tubes. The only significant change was the green little stuffed animal tucked into the covers with him. Ro must've brought by Mrs. Stinkbottom.

Sophie dropped her bookbag down and sat in the chair by the bed. She looked at Keefe's face. He looked surprisingly peaceful.

She leaned down to kiss his forehead. He didn't stir. She sighed and ran her hand through his hair.

"I love you," she whispered. She hoped he would react. Nothing. Hopefully, he could at least hear her.

After a few more minutes of stalling, Sophie figured she should probably start on her homework. She pulled out her math binder and started working on the questions.

About thirty minutes later, her heart stalled in her throat. She dropped the binder and scrambled to get on the floor. The tingles took over.

When the frenzy dissipated, a nurse with shaggy brown hair and round glasses was standing over her. She groaned from the fluorescent lights in her eyes.

"Are you alright?" the nurse asked her.

Sophie took in a few deep breaths. "Yeah... I'm ok. I just get seizures. That's normal for me."

The nurse held a hand out to her. She accepted the help up. That's when she finally got a good look at him. For some reason, he looked... oddly familiar. He stared back at her with a puzzled look.

She glanced down at his name tag. Elwin. Why did that name sound familiar?

"What's your name?" He asked her.

"Sophie," she said slowly. He seemed to be studying her just as much as she was him.

"This is going to sound like a weird question," Elwin began, "but have you ever had a stay at this hospital before? You look familiar."

"I have. When I was four."

The connection seemed to click at the same time for them.

"Were you one of my nurses?" Sophie asked.

"I believe so. You were here for your seizures, right? And your roommate was this little boy that you were inseparable from?"

She nodded.

He smiled a little bit. "It was actually quite adorable how close you two got. Did you two ever get to meet again after that? Ever stay friends?"

"You could say that." She glanced down at Keefe in his bed. She gently took his hand and gave it a squeeze.

It was apparent that Elwin had only now just put two and two together. His face fell.

"Oh," he whispered. "I'm so sorry."

Sophie bit her lip and blinked away tears. "Do you think he'll be ok?"

Elwin went over to the monitors. He took a moment to look at them before turning back to her.

"It's hard to say for the long run right now.  But, his vitals have been holding steady. They aren't great, obviously. But fairly good for the condition he's in. Remember, these things take baby steps."

Sophie glanced back at Keefe but nodded.
