(Don't play song until queued)
Sophie was folding up the blankets. It was the night of prom. Once she was finished, her plan was to go pick up Keefe so they could go out for dinner.
Except there was a knock in the door. Before she could go anf awnser it, the door opened. She froze. Surely, someone wouldn't be that stupid enough to break in like that.
She let out a breath when she saw it was Keefe. But... he was in a suit. And how did he get there? He wasn't supposed to be driving yet.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"Well," a smirk spread across his face. He revealed a bouquet of flowers from behind his back. "I wanted to ask you, will you be my date to prom?"
Her jaw went slack. A million different questions and responses swam around in her brain.
The only thing she could manage to get out of her mouth was, "Did the doctor say you could?"
"Weeeell." He scratched the back of his neck. "I may not have asked."
"Keefe!" She scolded. He gave a guilty grin. "You know you could set yourself back."
"Yeah, but... I couldn't let myself be why you didn't go."
She stepped up to him and adjusted the color of his white undershirt. "I swear, I really don't mind not going. I just want to make sure that you don't do something that could hurt yourself right now."
She gently traced where she knew his scar was. He stared at her hand. He took it and brought it up to his lips, placing a kiss on her knuckles.
"I'll be alright for one night, Foster. It's not like my heart is just going to decide it'll quit working the second we step into the room. I promise."
Sophie had to shove the awful images of him unconscious in the hospital out of her brain. "If I recall correctly, the last time you promised me something along those lines, you ended up half dead the next morning."
"Yeah, but there's one key difference here." He brushed her hair back. "I was trying to convince myself that I was fine then, too. Everything is still a bit achy, but that's how it's supposed to be. I swear, I'm able to handle it. So, what do you say, ready for this?"
Her heart swelled. She loved him so much. And the fact he went out of his way to plan all of this for her while he was still in, expected, pain. Her eyes started to well with tears of affection.
"Oh, Keefe," she whispered when he offered her the flowers again. "But... it's already started. And I'm not ready yet."
He shrugged. "Fashionably late is a phrase for a reason."
"What am I supposed to wear, though?"
"Try looking behind you."
She glanced over her shoulder. Grady and Edaline were lurking in the hallway. They had a red dress in their hands. It matched the color of Keefe's tie. They also had a set of rose corsages.
"I may or may not have recruited them to help me surprise you," Keefe informed her.
The tears spilled over. She fell into his arms he held out for her.
When she got her sniffles under control, she murmured, "You didn't have to do this."
"I know I didn't." He stroked her hair and kissed her head. "But you've been taking care of me lately. I wanted to do something nice back."
The tears started back.
"So, are we gonna do this?" He asked
Sophie nodded, swiping at her eyes. She let Edaline help her into the dress and do her hair and makeup.
When she was finished, Edaline kissed her forehead. "You got yourself a good one, there."
She smiled. "Yeah, I did, didn't I?" She agreed.
After pinning each other's corsages on, they went out on the front steps for a picture. Keefe insisted on taking off his oxygen for the picture, much to Sophie's displeasment. But it was over in two minutes, and he put it back on immediately after. That made her feel better about it.
"So question," she finally asked Keefe. "How did you get here. Cause you aren't supposed to be driving yet."
"Don't worry, I didn't drive myself," he told her as they were walking out to the garage. "Say hi to our chauffeur for tonight." He waved at Ro.
They got driven to the school and dropped off at the front of the gym. The room was decorated in streamers and balloons. Dance music was playing.
Sophie could already tell Keefe was getting sore from being upright. She squeezed his hand.
"Wanna go find somewhere to sit?" She asked.
He nodded. "I want to be by the snack table, though."
She laughed. "I don't blame you."
They found a pair of seats near the punch. They each took a cup to sip on. They laughed and joked with each other until Biana passed by the table.
Biana paused. "Sophie? Keefe? I didn't realize you guys were coming."
"Yeah, I didn't either until forty-five minutes ago," Sophie told her.
"Huh. Well, you guys should come dance!"
Keefe cringed. Sophie figured that probably wasn't the best idea for him.
"You should go," he told her. "I'll be fine here."
"You sure?" It didn't feel right leaving him there on his own.
"Yeah, go have fun."
She hesitated before getting up and crossing across the gymnasium floor. She felt a little less guilty when dex took the empty seat she left behind, striking up a conversation.
She the rest of the night she went back and forth from dancing with Biana and Linh to occasionally going to hang out with Keefe.
(Play song)
That was until the last song of the dance started. The announcer said that there was a request for what the final song should be. She knew exactly who suggested it when Keefe came over from his spot to hold a hand out to her.
"May I have this dance," he said with his smirk.
She took it and gave an over-dramatic curtsy. "You may, kind sir."
She tucked her head underneath his chin, locking their hands together. He kissed the top of her head. She had her ear pressed against his chest. She could hear his heart beating. It calmed her to know that it was still working alright in there.
He twirled her around and ended it off in a dip. She would've smacked him for even attempting to do it, when he knew he shouldnt, if it hadn't happened so fast. He knew exactly what he did, because he gave her a guilty smile. She rolled her eyes, but she had to laugh.
Sophie nuzzled her face into his neck. He adjusted one of his hands from her shoulder, to the small of her back to hold her closer.
"I love you, Sophie," he whispered into her ear.
"I love you, too, Keefe." She squeezed a little tighter. "So much."
After the song, everyone slowly migrated outside. The after-party was at one of the senior's houses. They decided not to go, but instead stayed at the school a little longer. They were seated on one of the benches, looking up at the stars together.
