I sighed, making sure to keep a hand on Jane's at all times so she couldn't run off as I paid for the small amount of shopping we needed. As we were waiting in line, I noticed her taking interested in a stuffed toy that was on the shelf by the til, "Mummy, can I get one?"

I shook my head, "I'm sorry, Sweetie, we need to pay for food."

She nodded in understanding and looked down at the floor, breaking my heart. I knew it was cruel to deny a child something, but I didn't have the extra money at the time with everything that was going on in my life.

After I'd paid, we left the shop and walked back home, thankful that there were places where people who had been kicked out were able to live, after the incident five years ago.

FLASHBACK

"Mother, Father, I need to speak to you. If you both have time that is," I spoke, fiddling with my arm out of nerves.

"Of course, (Y/n). What is it?" Mother asked, turning to face me. Father also walked over, removing his glasses and I took a deep breath, "I'm pregnant."

There was silence in the room until Father spoke, "What? You do realise this will bring shame on our family, (Y/n). At least Eliza and Angelica were married before they had kids!"

"As a matter of fact, we were engaged! The marriage didn't go through because the morning I found out, he died!" I retorted, shouting at both of them, the tears coming to my eyes at remembering my fiancé.

"(Y/n), get out. You're a disgrace to this family. You do not talk to your father that way!"

I tried to keep the tears in as I ran out the room, making eye-contact with Peggy, who I'd guessed had heard the conversation.

END OF FLASHBACK

As we were walking back down the street to the place we were staying in, I heard a shout from behind me, "Miss, wait!" I continued walking, knowing no one would be wanting me, but I was proven wrong when I felt a tap on my shoulder, "Miss, please."

I finally turned around to see a freckled man, his brown, curly hair tied up in a low ponytail as he leaned on his knees out of breath as if he'd been running to catch up with me. I then noticed the shopping back in his hand and realised he'd been the guy behind us in line.

"Miss, allow me to give you this," he spoke, taking the same soft toy Jane had been ogling over in the shop out of the bag and handing it to the young girl. She looked up at me, a questionable look on her face as if saying 'is it alright for me to keep it?' I smiled as the freckle man stood up, "I noticed her looking at it in the shop and saw her disappointed face when you said no, and I'm a sucker for children, I don't like seeing them sad, so I thought I'd do a nice thing today."

I felt my heart swell at his kindness and turned to Jane, "Say thank you to the nice man, Sweetie."

Jane nodded, an excited look on her face as she realised I was letting her keep the toy she'd been given, and she turned to the man, "Thank you, Mister!"
