The girls got home to not see Beca but their mother who had already started drinking already. Stacie thought this evening would an evening of pain.
"Good afternoon, girls," Their mother said in a more scary and very happy mood. None of the girls replied and just made their way through to the dining room. They all knew the drill by now.
"Now that is no way to great your mother,"
"Good afternoon mother," The girls replied like robots everyone just seemed tired.
"Jeez, aren't you all just rays of sunshine!" Rather than leaving the room, their mother sat down. An overwhelming silence filled the room as everyone got their work out to start. Addy was the one who seemed most comfortable with getting on with her work. She had a plan she was going to get to bed tonight. To be honest she was thinking she didn't have much of a choice who knew how long she had before she would crash. 10 minutes past of just their mother observing them and Stacie couldn't take it anymore.
"Where's Beca?" Stacie said leaning back in her chair and stopping doing her homework. Emily looked up nervously but she was willing to have Stacie back. Addy didn't look up she kept going.
"REBECCA should be where I left her," Their mother took a sip emphasising Beca full name even though she hated it.
"I want to see her," Stacie said bravely, unaware how much fun their mother was having watching them try to be brave.
"Me too," Emily said not fully putting her pen down but sitting more comfortably.
"Well, we don't get everything we want, do we? I wanted daughters who abaide me. Who respected me and did as they were told. I wanted smart daughters who didn't dress like sluts and accepted the punishments that they deserve. But I guess we are all disappointed, aren't we?" Both Stacie and Emily looked down awkwardly, they didn't think that their mother would automatically agree to let them see Beca but they didn't have much of a follow-up plan.
"Did you know everyone has a breaking point? And how amazing it is for someone to snap. Inflict just the right amount of pain and then someone will admit anything that you need them to. Even turn on the people they love the most." Their mother stood up and walked behind Stacie. She leaned forward and reached over Stacie's shoulder putting her wine glass down, then moving back to rest her hand on Stacie's shoulder as she stiffed at the touch. Sarah Mitchell pulled Stacie's hair behind her ear and leaned down making eye contact with Emily who was sitting opposite Stacie.
"They reveal things that they did wrong, they reveal secrets that they should never keep from their mother." Stacie hated the way her mother was playing with her hair, toying with her. Their mother knew something that so far the girls didn't know. Yet. Addy hadn't glanced up, she could see everything happening in the corner of her eye but knew that it was best to keep working. She also knew something her sisters didn't know.
"I'm thinking of keeping you all separate more. Rebecca seemed to have rubbed off on you more than I thought. But then again Stacie you are the older one. Maybe it was you. Maybe this is all your fault. If you had only taught your sisters better if you only were stricter with them. You could have saved them all from this. That's what they are thinking anyway.-"
"No, it's not Stacie's fault. You don't have to treat us like this. Stacie saved us. From you." Emily said the first time openly speaking against her mother. It had been too long she sat and took it not anymore. Their mother let go of Stacie's hair and slowly clapped Emily but stayed behind Stacie.
"Wow! Look at that little Emily grew a backbone. You don't want to run away and deny what's happening in this room. All those years you could have said something but you let your sisters take the fall for your actions. You don't need to act all innocent anymore. Rebecca told me all about the cameras. I can't believe you would lie to my face like that." Sarah glared at Emily as Emily looked into her eyes for any bluffing that she was doing.
