AVNI'S POV:
"You shouldn't have created a scene over just a tablet, Avni," Maa said. I stared at her in disbelief.
She left without another word. I took the box containing the tablet along with the letter and walked to my room. I was determined not to share this with her. Turning it on, I noticed my picture was already set as the wallpaper. As I explored it, checking a few features, I decided to skip college and head to the office instead.
Downstairs, everyone was gathered at the dining table for breakfast. I approached Dadi and bent to take her blessings. She merely patted my head in response.
"I'm leaving for the office," I said. No one acknowledged me, so I started to leave when Maa's voice stopped me.
"Avni, wait, beta." I turned to look at her, but she was nowhere in sight.
"Take this," she said, emerging from the kitchen with a lunchbox.
"What have you made, Maa?" I asked, curious. She paused for a moment before replying.
"Paneer Mushroom Masala and chapati," she said.
My disbelief was evident. "Maa, do I eat mushrooms?" I asked, watching her falter, clearly lost in thought.
I broke the silence. "Maa, you've even forgotten that your elder daughter is allergic to mushrooms." I placed the tiffin back on the table with a thud.
"I don't need this. Give it to your favorite daughter-or should I say your only daughter," I said with a bitter chuckle.
"Avni, it's not like that. It slipped my mind. I'll make a sandwich for you. Just wait five minutes," Maa offered hurriedly, turning to leave.
"Don't bother, Maa. I'm happy with the canteen's sandwiches," I replied, my voice firm.
I walked out of the house and headed to the bus stop. Taking the bus, I reached the office. The day was exhausting. The news about Aarohi had spread, and everyone seemed determined to get on my nerves, but I ignored them. My mood was already sour.
By evening, I returned to the house. House. The word echoed in my mind. That's all it was-a house, not a home. After freshening up, I began working on the tablet, transferring my handmade designs for the competition. I was grateful for my amazing colleague who had helped me figure things out.
