AVNI'S POV:
"Didn't you miss me, my baby?" I heard a voice from behind, sending shivers down my spine.
"Amar ji, please leave. If anyone sees you here, it won't be good for either of us." I pleaded, my voice barely above a whisper.
"I'm leaving for now, baby doll, but I'll be back soon. And when I do, you will be with me. Mark my words." He said before his footsteps faded into the distance.
I turned around, scanning the kitchen, but there was no one there. Moments later, the chefs and maids returned, resuming their work as if nothing had happened. Letting out a relieved sigh, I continued cooking.
After two long hours in the kitchen, I was finally free. I went to my room for a quick shower, emerging thirty minutes later, feeling refreshed. As I descended the stairs, I saw Bua-saa sitting with some women her age. I quickly covered my head and went to greet them.
"Khama Ghani." I said politely.
"Ghani Khama." They replied in unison.
"Avni, go and serve lunch for all of us." Bua-saa instructed.
Nodding, I left for the kitchen.
I began heating the dishes and setting the dining table with the help of the maids. A servant was sent to call them for lunch, while I packed tiffins for Arjun ji, Vikram ji, Papa, and Chacha-saa, who were at the office. Handing the lunch boxes to the driver, I instructed him to deliver them.
Not wanting to interrupt Bua-saa's social gathering, I settled on the couch in the hall and picked up a magazine.
"AVNI! WHERE ARE YOU?" Bua-saa's loud voice startled me. I quickly closed the magazine and hurried to the dining area.
"Ji, Bua-saa? Do you need anything?" I asked politely.
"Who will serve us? I told you to stay here, not wander around the Rajmahal." She scolded, her tone laced with venom.
"Sorry, Bua-saa. I will serve you all now." I responded and immediately started serving.
"Why don't you join us for lunch?" A young woman, seemingly my age, asked kindly after I had served everyone.
"No, it's alright. Please enjoy your meal." I replied with a small smile, turning to leave.
But I halted abruptly at the next voice.
"Avni, sit and eat. You haven't had anything since breakfast, and that's not good for your health."
My breath hitched. It was Amar ji. But why was he concerned about my health?
I turned to refuse but stopped upon seeing the look on Bua-saa's face. Reluctantly, I sat in my usual spot. Soon, Amar ji took the seat beside me.
"You know, Kavya used to work with Arjun, but God knows what happened a few months ago that he suddenly moved to Mumbai and married her." An elderly woman commented.
I looked down, not letting their words affect me. I quietly served myself rice, aloo kofta, and a plain chapati, focusing on my food.
