"Hey, Why are you sitting alone?" Kyle turned his head around as someone tapped his shoulder.

"Oh, Hey, What's up?"

"Why are you sitting here alone?" He was concerned about his posture and his time alone, minutes before the performance.

"I just need some time alone"

"Sure" Kevin walked away from him. He always considered Kyle to be a good friend. He used to share his snack with him after performance and he supports Kevin with his instruments. Just to check, he returned. "Hey, Are you alright?"

"Yes, why do you ask?"

"Just checking Kyle. You don't seem happy about the upcoming performance"

"I am not happy. I am struggling to balance school and performance"

"Hey, It's alright. Do you want to talk about it?" He tapped on his shoulder to comfort him.

"I feel like I can't play today"

"That's alright"

"I don't want to let the teacher and my parents down"

"I get it. I sometimes feel like giving up playing drums as well" Kevin was about to tear up hearing that. He enjoyed playing the violin a few months ago. Now it all seemed alien to him.

"Is it? How are you still playing?"

"I am not entirely sure. I love music. I like practicing with my dad. I guess your mom plays the violin too. You know how it feels."

"I don't know. I really love playing the violin. But I am not particularly happy about competing for the first chair"

"Even I am not interested in it. But the orchestra wants that. We are just participating"

"My mom thinks I should practice more like you" Kyle and Kevin are the two best performers in their school orchestra. Nobody can even compete with them.

"Did she say that?" He didn't know how to approach this. After all, he is just a teenager.

"She didn't mean that but she hints me a lot. I am not feeling good about it. Sometimes, it is just not the same. I feel like I need a break. This competition for the first chair takes out my interest in music. I feel like my evenings are becoming like a schedule" Kevin started to tear up saying that out loud. That too, is to the person who everyone considers as his competition.

"I feel the same too. There is this one trick I use. I will tell you that" He wiped his tears away to listen to him. "I will play music for myself. I think music is my friend and I admire my drum set. I will sit and get inspired by him as a friend. I think you take care of your violin well too. Your instrument is your friend. You can take him to your world. My dad taught me this"

"My mom cherishes her violin as well. She got carried away because of keeping up the legacy in this school. She studied here. She was the first chair"

"If you sit and talk about this with her, I really think she will understand. She seems so cool"

"She will understand it, for sure. I just felt like giving up. I think it is dumb."

"Now, we are going to perform in a few minutes. You need to rethink this idea. Can we go perform for us? Let everyone else decide who gets to be the first chair"

"Sounds like a good idea, Come let us go" Kevin held his hand tight.

The curtains were raised. Kevin and Kyle opened their first note. The audience was in awe. They both looked at each other with admiration. There was no competition in the admiration. It was just pure.
