"Sometimes I wonder..." I was interrupted by a thud. I turned around. My brother was standing there with a report in his hands. I didn't know that he would return so soon.
"Did you ask him to do that? Pie, what is in your hands?"
"Mom, when did you come back?"
"I couldn't walk past the second street. I need a vehicle. Now, don't distract me from the paper. What is in your hands?"
"This is just a post"
"What post?"
"Our neighbors post. I picked it up my mistake.'
"But you are just entering. Don't make me argue. What is it? Is it the report? Did you get the report without discussing it with me? Do you see what is happening?" She turned around. I was staring at them. "Is this all your plan?'
"He wasn't supposed to come at this time" I gave him a disappointed look and walked towards him. I grabbed that paper and went upstairs. My mom couldn't come catch me or grab that paper. She is in a wheelchair. The report in my hand will show whether she has cancer or not. I ran upstairs.
"Why are you both traumatizing me? What did I do to deserve you? You never listened to me when you were children. Even now, you don't listen to me. I don't want a report in this house" She shouted but the noise just faded when I entered the room. My brother didn't follow me. I wonder if he read the report. I placed it on my table. Drank nearly 1 litre of water. Lately, I have been thirsty and hungry all the time. My mom never snapped at us ever. Last year, she broke her hip bone and placed herself in a wheelchair. This year, she started with some symptoms. She severely lost a lot of weight. Her appetite was reduced. Now this report is from the doctor. She is in a basic sense of denial. I opened it without a second thought.
"Why are you both doing this to me?" I could hear her voice through my doors. My brother came upstairs.
"So?" I nodded. "What are we going to do now?"
"I don't know"
"Is it serious?"
"Final stages"
"She is crazy"
"You would have been crazy too"
"I would have suffered more than her. She is strong. Can we afford treatment?"
"Dad can cover it. We should track him down" He vanished two years back. He said he wanted to travel and chase spirituality. Is it slang to become a loose man? We didn't know. Thankfully, we both graduated and had full-time jobs when he went away. My mother was pissed. She accepted her fate.
"He won't come and save us"
"We don't have other choices"
"Downstairs, that woman."
"She has the strength to handle it all. I don't know which part made her a child again."
"We should try to talk to her"
"I have been doing the same thing for the past two months. No improvement."
"Is it a symptom?"
"It can't be" My brother held my hand so tight. He knew that we could get over this together as a family of three. He just couldn't believe that. "I don't think we need to talk to her. If anyone was in her position, they would be comfortable in this mental state. I just need you to support me to care for her, love her, and give her hope."
"We will do it all together. She raised us so well. We should raise her out of this bloody cancer. We will not talk to her about it. Just ease her into it. Keep this report on the table. Let her decide what she wants to do."
We kept the report on the table. We spoke to her about her choice. We didn't talk to her about it again. We just assured her that we were here despite all the circumstances. We showed her the same strength she had before.
After a week, when we entered the house, my mother was opening the door. "I think, I can do it. Let us go to the hospital" Love for us might have been her strength.
