We were cooking—a very delicious Sunday meal.
I married into a very loving family. Coming from the Southern part of India, arranged marriage was skeptical. I stepped into a new family. They have small family rituals. It has been three months. We are happy. I got two new siblings and the fun is unparalleled. My father-in-law walked in with some groceries.
"Dear, are you okay with plantain?"
"Yes, papa. I like plantain. I eat all vegetables." I smiled at him. He asks my preference all the time. My husband gets it from him. He is trying to learn about me.
"You are going to be very healthy unlike some people" He looked at my sister-in-law. She was staring at him and gave a valid comeback.
"Someone who has Diabetes should never talk"
"Valid" He is cheerful like that. He is very involved in everything.
"Vinu, Come here" There comes my mother-in-law running to him as he was cooking. Yes, today my father-in-law is making the whole meal while everyone else is helping him. He is a master of the kitchen. He makes delicious meals for everyone based on their preference and health. "Taste this. I made this new recipe" She didn't even doubt his capability.
"Oh my god. I married this person for a reason."
"What about love? You told me you loved me."
"Do you still believe that? Your cooking skills are the one and only reason. Others are addition."
"Am I figuring out a marriage scam after about 30 years?"
"I guess, you do" My husband came in with a plate full of onions.
"Oh, Shiv. What the hell?"
"What, papa?"
"You chopped onion to feed 15 people at once. What am I a caterer?"
"Oh, it wouldn't hurt. We can keep the remaining in the fridge."
"I told you to chop 6 onions."
"I did."
"Not the big ones. I told you 6 onions - small"
"I thought chop finely. Like small pieces."
"Brain not braining." He threw in a Gen Z term randomly in a conversation. He is chill like that.
"What should I do now?"
"Vegetables are supposed to be fresh every time. You can't cut up vegetables the day before. The taste will be very bad. Like a day-old Chinese."
"Don't you dare talk about day-old Chinese food. You're summoning like a million people in my university. We thrive on it." My sister-in-law comes in defending her taste in food.
"That is why you all are waiting like primates for your visit home."
"True"
"Valid"
"Legit"
We all sat down for the meal. We all did an aesthetic spread on the table and tasted the most delicious meal of everyone's life at that point.
"Vinu, how do you like the food?" Like a proper chef and a husband, he wanted his wife to appreciate his skill.
"Like I said, I married you for all the right reasons."
"How about you? My dear spawns?"
"It's alright"
"You started a war for no reason"
"Hey, why are you teasing my husband?"
"Because it is mid."
"My cooking is mid?"
"You are mid."
"By the way, what is mid?"
"Vinu, we are boomers. We don't know what mid is."
"Mid is like average, I guess." I pitched in. I saw them laugh, scream, and silly fight and made me feel involved in all those conversations. It has been three months of reality television in this house. I enjoy every single minute.
Love for a family that excels in humor is peak. I am experiencing it here. It can't get more lively than this.
