"You can sleep for a few more hours. I have to take off today. I will make breakfast for the kids." The husband strokes the head.
"Are you sure about it? I have seen you make terrible pancakes." She laughs into his hands.
"I know. But they unbelievably taste so amazing. I am sure, my hands are magical" He laughs and gets up from bed. He is a struggling salesman who might lose his job soon. He is getting a lot of calls from different clients but the product is not in his hand yet.
"I don't have any energy"
"That is why I wanted you to rest."
"I can. But the kids are screaming and playing all day. I need some silence. I can't rest here"
"You could go to the gym"
"Gym?"
"Yes, Gym"
"Gym sounds amazing. I could put on my workout clothes and have a smoothie on the way"
"Yeah. Also, it will give you some energy. You can have breakfast while coming back"
"You are a genius. I wonder why you say that you are a struggling salesman." She sarcastically mocks him. They are friends before couples. He laughs it off as well.
"Honey, there is a reason why we all are struggling"
"I know. I was kidding. Have fun with the kids"
"I will. Go safe" He keeps calling his kids while the mom sneaks out of their house. It is manageable. Somewhat manageable. He thinks about the next few hours. One of the two kids walks with a cough. He panics.
"What happened?"
"I was playing in the rain yesterday. I think I caught a cold. What is for breakfast?"
"I made pancakes and scrambled eggs. Do you need anything else?"
"Where is mom?"
"She went to get some fresh air. Where is your brother?"
"He is still asleep. No, look at him. He is awake. Also, mom makes orange juice. I want juice to flush down all this" He panicked again looking at the other child. He was walking with a limp. "What happened dude?"
"I hit my knee in the cot. Where is mom? I need my mom." He started to cry. As a father, he felt so overwhelmed and thankful for his wife at that moment. She kept the whole house sane. He handed over two plates to them and searched through the medicine cabinet. There is a cough and a bruise.
"Can we eat breakfast?" He sat on the table. Served them their food.
"Wait, he puked."
"Oh my god, why are you puking?" He rushed towards the table and broke his plate. The eggs went everywhere. There was a puke on the floor in a moment. He cleaned up after the kid and fixed him another plate. He was struggling to make them take their medicines. He stopped to make the kid drink the orange juice. The whole house was calm after the breakfast. He sat down on the couch and saw his wife pull up on the driveway.
He was so disappointed because of the mess. The kitchen fell apart. There was so much smell from all the trial-and-error pancakes. "I am so sorry. I tried to help you but it turned upside-down. I will clean it up"
She was shaken. She saw the kitchen, the burnt pancakes, the uncleared puke, and the open medicine cabinet, and understood the whole situation. She dropped the water bottle and hugged him tight. "I know"
The hug felt so perfect for the imperfect love he tried to express.
