I turn around the table and see all my girlfriends sitting with their hearts broken. All we talk about is how we were very blind to so many bad characteristics in our partners. I have been in a fair share of relationships. Crush, Love, Attraction, Infatuation, you name it. My girls are amazing to me. When it comes to them, they accept them as they are. But when it comes to someone strange to the group, like their boyfriends, there is collective judgment and criticism.
My best friend Angel walks in.
"Hello, Beauty. How are you?"
"I am good, Angie. How are you?"
"I am doing amazing, Sara. What are you all talking about?"
"Just boys"
"Haha. Funny. Let me in."
She just walks into the group and blends in. She lost her first boyfriend to a car accident. Tragic, yes. After a week, she was in another relationship. I was awestruck. I didn't understand her logic at that time. She was happy. She had nearly 4 relationships after that incident. No single long-term commitment. She was happy that way.
"Pass me the salt, Sarah"
"Here you go"
"Oh my god. I am noticing it now only. We have the same hoops. Swarovski?"
"Yes"
That is Stacy. She adds an "h" to my name. She is cute and naughty. Way too clingy in all relationships and gets her sweetheart broken by men who are not suitable for her tenderness. She never learns. It is like she is dating her first boyfriend's clones since high school. She still believes that it is not a pattern but her choice.
"Did you guys know about Alphie's breakup? It was pathetic. I guess they both ruined their relationship after her new job."
"She deleted all the pictures and quotes so many bad love quotes. She is becoming a rebel."
"Exactly"
"She changed a lot."
"People are supposed to change, Stace"
"I know, Mia. But sometimes, the other person should also be aware of it. Else, it is going to devastate them."
"Hmm."
Mia sounds sane. She recently got a surfboard to learn surfing. She handles her work well and has had a stable boyfriend for over 4 years now. She never takes her boyfriend anywhere. They are just exclusive and try to keep it private. Only her problems come out of her conversations. She goes into depressive episodes due to relationship problems. Cryptic Instagram status and whatnot.
As long as she keeps it private, everyone assumes it is well and good. Safe and secure.
"Sarah, how is your work?"
"Good, Nat. I am getting promoted soon."
"Oh my god, That's amazing."
"Yes, good for you."
"Making it high in Finance is amazing."
"Yes, I agree."
"Good for you"
I just sat there smiling at them. I was observing their love lives and the gossip session. I rarely like gossip but it is fun to hear. I don't participate. These conversations only define that people are like thumbprints. Everyone is different and the perspectives are different. As they go, they learn about themselves or they don't. It is just about the connection.
Heartbreaks happen. Crippling physical and mental health challenges when the world revolves as usual. Tears, Junk, and Sabotage. Re-inventing themselves and moving on. Some stay stuck and lie down there curled up. Overthinking till the head hurts. No knowledge about what's happening inside us and outside us. The way of life just continues despite the hurt and damage. Simple yet effective remedies lie on the other side of this phase. Wonder who makes it that far without facing a few wars.
At the end of the day, they all seem happy with each other. I am happy to see them too. Love and Heartbreaks make this life.
