"Fred, How are you?"
"I am good, Thomas. How are you? How are the kids?"
"You mean the children or the grandchildren"
"Yes?"
"Everyone is good." He laughed heartily at Fred. Fred and Thomas are best friends in the neighborhood. They saw the whole transformation of the city since the 1950s. They are the hero of the town. Talk of the city as well because they were best friends for so long that they started to look like twins.
"How are things?"
"Work is good"
"Since, when are you working?"
"I am helping the library these days."
"Can I join you?"
"Sure. I will ask my librarian."
"You have a boss. Alright"
"Yes, I do. Not too late to have a boss. Am I right?"
"No. I can't do bosses. That is why I started the business."
"You are right. She is a pain for me too. I am thinking about becoming the librarian."
"High hopes"
"Where were you?"
"I went to meet my daughter."
"How is she?"
"She is not feeling well. Doctors diagnose a lot of things. She just needs nature. I asked her to move to a farm area instead of the city."
"Agreed"
Fred is a little uptight since he lost his business. He is financially secure but his son took too many risks and the company went bankrupt two years ago. Since that time, Thomas has been in his company. He always looked out for him. Fred has put his hard work and sweat into the company. He couldn't get past his son's authority afterward. He just retired.
"Hey, Fred"
"Yes"
"Can you help me with a problem?"
"What problem?"
"Recently one of my garages got on fire. I have to claim insurance on some of the products back there. Can you come and check it for me?"
"You could ask your son about it. The younger generation. They know much better."
"But you see, I only know the best Fred. I don't know anyone else"
"Alright. Alright. I will come and take a look in the evening."
"Where are you heading right now?"
"To grab a lunch. Do you want to join?"
"Absolutely."
Tom keeps him busy. One minute with his own thoughts, at this point, could make him break down. Fred is a child at heart and a sharp businessman in his head.
"The food is delicious. Do you often come here?"
"I do. I know the owner too. His son maintains the place now. Such a talented young gentleman. You should meet him. He is about your daughter's age."
"Sure sure. We will meet him after the lunch. Talking about this, I think we should open a restaurant."
"You know what, I was thinking about it too."
The days are prolonged like this. He engages him in conversation still like they were eight. Too many memories. Too much love and respect. Fred walks through life with a burden in his heart. He can't help it. Thomas can. Love is empathetic.
