"Mom, can you come here?"
"Yes, tell me"
"I need a laptop next week"
"We can borrow it from our neighbors. Moon will give you her laptop. Why do you need it? I will put in a word."
"I want to do an assignment"
"Okay. Do you know how to do it?"
"Yeah. Yeah. I know the project well"
"Is it a group project?"
"Yes, mom"
"Who is joining you?"
"My friend, Tina"
"Tina, is that the girl from your softball team?"
"Yes."
"I know her mother. We both go to the same market"
"I am inviting her to our house next week"
"Sure. Sure. What does she like?"
"I will ask her"
"Can you talk to her mom about this group project? She seems scared of her"
"Sure. Tomorrow when I come to pick you up, I will ask her"
"Only two people in a group project. Huh?"
"No, Noah said he doesn't want to join us because he is only doing the model. We are doing the presentation"
"Okay. I will ask Moon now"
"Also, Mom, can we get a second-hand computer for us?"
"You have very few assignments on the computer. Can we buy it after 3 or 4 months?"
"I might have very few assignments on the computer. But I have a lot to learn other than that. One of my school students was speaking about computer labs on the bus. I was very curious. She said everyone is programming these days. Even the kids."
"Sure. I get it. We will buy one soon."
A week later, Tina joined us for lunch over the weekend.
"Hello, Tina"
"Hello, Aunty"
"How are you?"
"I am good. Thank you, Aunty. How are you?"
"I am good. We are about to start lunch."
"I will sit and watch TV"
"Did you already have lunch?"
"Yes, Aunty. I ate a sandwich."
"You had one sandwich. That will not be enough. I made your favorite spaghetti and a bottle of chocolate milk. Come sit with us today"
"Uh"
"Your mom won't say anything. I spoke to her about the project. She said It was fine. Come"
"Sure"
"Look, we also have cut fruits. You can take as much as you want to snack during your project. How is school?"
"It is going good, Aunty. I really love your spaghetti"
"Not as much as your mom's food. I can cook special kid's favorite"
"Thank you, Aunty"
"Are you good friends with her?"
"Yes, mom. We sit together"
"How is the food?"
"It is good, Aunty"
They both went ahead to watch TV before starting their project. I was standing by the door, preparing some dough. I watched them laugh at their favorite cartoon. Tina said that this was her first proper meal of the week. They both didn't bother to dig deep into that sentence. They were right back at their cartoon without another word.
The sentence struck a chord in my heart. I knew that Tina's parents were struggling. She chose to share her life with another child and It broke me down. The new week started and I was still hung upon that sentence.
"Mom, We are going to do that presentation today. Wish me luck"
"All the best. Do it well"
"Sure, mom"
"Here is your lunch"
"Why is it so heavy?"
"I made one for Tina too"
"Okay"
No more questions asked. She didn't inquire. Maybe I should help her look out for cues. I smiled at her as she walked away. One selfless mother can nurture many children. One selfless love can be a deep hug.
