Mia is such a cool young adult - patient, articulate, and smart. The combination is considered deadly. Anyway, Lucas is her weakness. She has been seeing him since she was 11. Nobody can describe the unspoken love. Her heart beats faster, her eyes become dry, palpitations, etc., An awkward friendship stage for years.
She is walking past him in the grocery store aisle. He has been living in the other part of town for most of the time. It has been a year since Lucas moved to the same place as her.
Now, they belong to the same community yet talk a lot less than other same-year-olds.
"I think there is no milk left. I have two bottles" Trust her, it was hard to put that sentence together. He might not even be searching for milk.
"Oh, It's fine. We don't need it this week" He walked away. Damn, that was hard to watch. Two hands scour through the vegetables, together.
"So, I saw you on a motorbike. Is that yours?" She wished she could be a pillion.
"Ah, no. My cousin visited. It was his bike. I am just trying to learn how to ride one"
"Wow. I wanted to learn to drive as well." Nope. He looked cool. She would look cooler behind him.
"You should. It is not tough"
"I see. Some day" She wishes he would offer to teach her but I guess they are not there yet.
"Yeah, some day" He walked away again. Ouch. Too painful to watch.
"Bye," Lucas walked away taking her breath away. She has been trying to talk to him but she couldn't find words at the right time. She moves through the aisle.
"Here we meet again" She laughed sheepishly. He smiled at her. That was more than enough action to keep her happy for another week. "So, Do you come here often?" How did she not notice?
"Yes, my mother buys all her groceries here. I guess it is very near"
Her mind already planned to buy groceries together with him in the future. Still the same awkward stage. "My mom thinks the same. The produce is fresh here every day"
"Really?"
"Yeah. You don't buy vegetables here?"
"We go to the farmer's market"
"That is smart. I wish we purchase there as well"
"You should" They both moved together to the cashier. There was so much silence and register dings for the next minute and a half. Lucas smiled at her twice while standing there. In her mind, it was awkward since she felt her words were empty.
After the bill, he said goodbye. He might not have said that. Did she imagine it? We won't know. Mia was lost in her perfect little world with him already.
---------
"Mom, Lucas's mom is buying groceries from Farmer's Market. I think we should go there as well"
"Please. I have seen those prices. It is twice the amount. We can't go there. Grocery store produce is fine"
"But, Mom, we should try at least once"
"Sure, next week, we will go"
"Thanks, Mom" She went to write a page of conversation starters since he is introverted. Next time when they meet, she at least wants to make an impression that she is a good conversationalist. He will definitely come to the farmer's market next week.
----------
Wandering through the streets, not to search for fresh produce but for Lucas's head. Mia was restless. She didn't even look at the vegetables that she was paying a hefty amount. She forgot to even ask for extra discounts. She walked through the market only to find nobody.
"Hey, You are Lucas's cousin, right?"
"Yes, Who are you?"
"I am Mia. Nice to meet you. Is Luke with you?"
"Are you his friend?"
"Sort of, yeah"
"They moved to Asia, two days ago. His father got a great job. You don't know? He is going to start school there" Mia couldn't believe her ears. She just stood there thinking about all the chances she missed talking to him.
She can't understand how she was living in her head when he was just before her. Going to Asia, in search of an unspoken love became farfetched for her in seconds. "Oh," She walked away.
"Yeah"
To Mia, This unrequited love is cruel.
