There is my daughter. Her name is Milo. My husband was probably drunk when she named her after a drink. I get it. It is like a pet name. We officially changed her name to Dove. I practically changed it to that name. We still call her Milo at home. We love that name for her. She looks like a princess.
She brought home a puppy named "Milo" to our house. She is 7 years old and she loves exploring everything. Her conversation about the name made me feel so happy.
"Mom, I named her Milo because she is cute."
"It is a male dog. It is not a female dog. He is a boy."
"Milo sounds beautiful for both boys and girls. I like this name. I am Milo too."
"But you can't call her by your name."
"But my name is so beautiful."
I raised the most considerate person who loves herself. She called him Milo for two days and then came back to me.
"Mom, do you think she likes that name?"
"Oh baby, I don't know. Why do you want to know?"
"Ugh. I don't know, Mom. He doesn't turn around when I call him."
"Maybe he is just hungry or sleepy. He turns around when I call him."
"Oh, okay"
Even I felt the same. The dog didn't respond to its name on my watch. I called him again. He turned around. It could be a coincidence. I did around 10 times that day, and he responded immediately for 7 times. My daughter became worried. Her vacation ended and she went back to school. Milo became sick. My husband and I took him to the vet.
"What happened doctor?"
"Did you take him to a vet as soon as you got him?"
"Yes, we did. We got him the exact vaccination."
"Maybe he was born with this virus."
"Oh my god, what virus?"
"Your dog is sick. He has got about 1 month left. I am sorry. Most street dogs pick up this virus from other dogs. You don't have to worry about it. It is not contagious to humans. Just try to take care of him for a month. You can also put him down if you want."
"We can put him down."
"Marty."
"Sarah, we can't keep him around. There are other pets near us. He is taking a walk down with so many pets. We can't put them in danger. He has got about a month left. Let him rest peacefully."
"What about Milo?"
"Milo is an understanding girl."
"I can't tell her that her favorite first pet is dead. You do it. I will meet you back at home."
I hugged Milo for the last time and I went home. My husband came back after 2 hours. He didn't talk to me. I was preparing myself to face my daughter who will be back from school anytime now. I was biting my nails and waiting outside. She walked in. She hugged me spent time with her dad and searched for Milo.
"Mom, where is my Milo?"
"Uh."
"Hey, Kiddo" My husband jumped right in.
"Yes. Daddy"
"Milo was sick when you went to school. We took him to the doctor."
"Oh my god. What happened to him? Is he alright?"
"No, kiddo. Do you remember we had a pandemic and schools were shut?"
"Yes, daddy."
"He got some virus like that. We took him to the doctor because he was not responding well. You also called his name and he didn't turn around, right?"
"Yes, daddy. He didn't turn around even after five times. I called him, Milo, Milo"
"Yeah. I am so sorry. We didn't tell you before we took him to the hospital."
"Oh, you always take me to the doctor when I am sick too."
"Yes, yes"
"He will be alright Dad."
"Sure, kid. The doctor said that we had to get another pet dog. He is sick and he might spread the virus to the other dogs in our neighbors. We can't make them sick too. Right?"
"Oh. So I can't bring him back home?"
"I am sorry, Milo"
"That is sad, Dad. He was happy here. He was my favorite."
"I know. We can get another dog. Is that okay?"
"No, Dad. I am very sad about getting another dog. What if he feels sick too?"
"Okay, let us think about it later. You can take your time. When you are ready to get another dog, we can discuss that."
Her love for the first favorite pet hurt me as I watched them have a difficult conversation. I can't imagine being 7 years old and hearing that she can never see her pet again. Love and Truth hurts a lot more when the heart is still tender. I can see it in her eyes as she walked away.
