"I have known you for almost 50 years now."
A faint laughter came out of our living room. My grandmother was sitting there with her friend. She is almost 76 years old now. Imagine being friends with someone for around 50 years. That is five decades of memories. The sad part is that she is moving somewhere else. They have been living in the same place together for fifty years. My grandmother is a very emotional person. Her friend, on the other hand, is so cold-blooded. Maybe that is the secret to their friendship. My very tender, and fragile grandmother got adopted by that stunner. She just remained peaceful under her shadow.
"50 years? I think it is about 55 years. Remember we studied in the same school in the beginning. You forget everything."
"I am aging."
"Really?"
Some random funny memories. I grew up watching them hold a lot of power in their families. They both lost their husbands 3 years apart. I was sad when my grandfather died and my grandmother was an emotional mess. Her friend gave her all the courage. It was not motivational speech and therapy. It was just role model and a way of living.
"Do you remember our first class together?"
"No."
"Do you remember our first vacation?"
"Oh, that I remember. It was very difficult."
"Hey, come here. Some years back, My best friend and I went to a nearby state. It was very dark and the weather was bad. She got sick and I got stuck in a place 3 miles away. I went to bring her medicine. We met each other only after 2 days. I couldn't travel from that place. But I met her and gave her the medicine. I was so scared at that time. I didn't have any machine like these days. We just remembered our routes by heart."
"It must have been tough, grandma. How did you come back?"
"I came with a young gentleman in that small town. He looked so terrifying but he was the only one who brought nearly 15 people back to their homes. Some houses were damaged by that rain. We were very tired. Especially, some people died in the same street that we decided to stay. Thank god, she came out of it alive."
"I was hiding in a room and secured my spot with a table above my head. I ate some food and closed all windows and doors. I didn't wake up for one whole day. I couldn't bear my illness. Two people came to rescue me but I wanted to wait for her. I didn't know what happened to her. I was stuck there for two whole days with no electricity, absolutely no idea about my friend."
"Good god, we are alive."
"I know."
They have a million memories together. They have spent every day talking over the phone, complaining about their husbands and house. They have a lot of souvenirs because they are also badass when traveling alone. They have been to countless countries. At one point in time, they ran out of pages in passports.
To everyone who talks with them, they give a piece of advice. Love and togetherness improve the quality of life. Find someone to bond with and connect with through your life's circumstances. It makes you feel a little more beauty in every day.
