"Can you pick up the mop from the yard? Tom. Where are you? I think it is going to rain." Linda ran out to bring the dry mop inside as her husband didn't answer. "Hey, Mrs.Alfred. I think it is going to rain. Did you dry any clothes?"
"No, Linda. Where is Thomas? I didn't see him anywhere"
"He is probably upstairs. I should find him soon."
"Suddenly, all these husbands are nowhere to be found when we need them"
"So true. I have to yell at him. Was Mr.Alfred like that in the beginning?"
"No, He was alright. I was not helpful". She smiled at her and ran inside as the droplets hit their face. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred are this popular old couple on the street. They are very kind, generous, rich, and helpful. Sometimes, she bakes cookies for the whole street to celebrate some random day in their lives. She is happy to be with her husband. Tom leaves after the rain to find Mrs.Alfred again in the backyard.
"Hello, Mrs.Alfred. How are you?"
"I am fine, Thomas. How are you? How is work?"
"Everything is fine. How is Mr.Alfred?"
"Shhhh." She shushed him as she took out a small box. The transparent container had some cake in it. She was probably going to eat it.
"Sorry. Is that a cake?"
"Yes. My husband is diabetic. I could easily show this to him and mock him. Today, he has been craving sweets. I don't want to show off. I just want to eat this by myself without making him sad." She told that with a lot of love and sarcasm.
"Don't worry. I won't tell him" Tom walked inside smiling at her innocence as Linda walked to the porch.
"Linda, Linda" There was a dainty little voice over the fence. She could barely see a cane pop up. It was Mr.Alfred. "How are you?"
"I am good Mr.Alfred. Why are we whispering?"
"I need a scissor. A good one."
"Sure, why not?" Linda walks inside and comes out with a small scissors. "Wait, Why do you need it? "
"My wife is in the backyard. I guess she is eating a cake. I am not sure. I can smell the sugar. I just felt like it had been a long time since she scolded me. I am trying to cut a hole in this chair." He sounded like a child all over in love.
"What good does it do?"
"Let me tell you. That lady will definitely pick a fight over a scratch on that chair. I just need some fun today"
Linda smiled at him. "I wish it doesn't end the other way. Good luck Mr.Alfred"
"Thank you, Linda. Don't worry, I will be alright" He walked inside with a little hop over the grass waiting for his wife. Linda admired his efforts and walked inside.
At night, before sleeping, Linda and Thomas were talking about their small incidents. They both laughed over their love. Deep inside, a small part of their heart wanted the same love in their old age.
