There is my fiancé, running away from me. We were about to get married in a month. The ashes and dust storms are blinding, somewhere. His mother held my hand tight. He is a warrior. He is a soldier. I take pride in it.
"Hello"
I didn't know it was the last call I would ever overhear. He was on a call with one of his colleagues. I wanted to talk to him. I entered his house and his phone rang. What a tragedy!
"Yes, sir. I will start preparing. I will be there on time."
"Hey"
He smiled at me and then stood for a second looking at me. He rushed to his mother. He turned around to look at me and grabbed my hand. We went to the backyard.
"Maa."
"Yes"
"I received the call. I have a duty. I have to report tomorrow. I am taking tonight's train. I will be back soon. The border is running out of control due to threat calls. One of our team members is on the other side. I am going to pack now."
"You can ask her."
My soon-to-be mother-in-law believed in women taking the lead in their houses. She has been running this family for more than 3 decades. She knows better. She thought that asking me would be the appropriate response. I wish I could become half as independent as her in the future.
"Hey. I am sorry. I didn't want to go before the wedding. My job is very cruci..."
"You can go. Be safe and return to me soon."
"Thank you. I will be back"
He was not back. It has been a year since he left. He passed away in the second week of the attack and I have never been the same since that day. He was the love of my life and I wanted to marry him, raise children, and grow old. As one of the normal girls, I wanted a simple, peaceful life.
The irony is that I knew exactly about my destination. I still stepped into it with a whole heart. He still takes care of me. I am teaching Mathematics in a local elementary school. My mother stays with my mother-in-law and I take care of the household.
"Maya, ma'am"
"Yes."
"Please help me with this water bottle"
"Sure. Give me"
"Thank you so much. I am so sick today."
"Why, what happened?"
"I bathed in the river for an hour yesterday."
"It must be so fun."
"It was very nice. But when I came back home, I didn't tell my mom. She will be angry if I tell her. I caught a cold."
"Don't be afraid of your mom. You can tell her anything. She is just concerned about your health. Okay? Next time, be honest with her. Tell her that it was very fun and you will be careful next time."
"Sure. Is it okay if I take a nap?"
"Sure. Of course"
"Thank you"
"I will bring medicine from the office. Your cold will be gone. And I will inform your mother when she comes. Is that okay?"
"Uhm..."
"She will understand. I promise. We can handle it differently if she beats you now."
"Ma'am"
These little humans make my entire day. They have different problems in their life and they come to me for solutions. Every day it gets interesting. I am proud of this job. I wanted to be a teacher since I was a small kid. I brought myself to a strong halt in life. This is where I am going to be, for the rest of my life. Everything I asked for, is already here. The soldier's memory in my heart, in a simple village surrounded by children, and I am teaching. Except for the war in my heart to still win his love.
