I saw her shadow. I immediately knew it was her. She was hiding behind a curtain. I didn't have the courage to sneak behind her. I used to do that all the time. She would be shocked to see me. It has been 4 years since we broke up. She is standing right there with her boyfriend. I don't know if he is her boyfriend. She is enjoying his company. I don't want to ruin her day.
We broke up because I was not the right person for her. She was the right person for me. She said she couldn't handle my expressionless relationship. I was an introvert who didn't communicate much. She wanted someone very extroverted. That's what she said. We broke up and she tortured me for about a year saying that I messed up her timeline and ruined her life. I didn't say anything. I was standing there taking the blame. It made her even more mad. She just walked away one day after shouting at me. That was the last time I saw her. I tried to patch us up but there was nothing left.
"Hello, Shiv"
"Hello, Mayu."
"Oh my god. I can't believe you are here. Are you friends with the groom?"
"Actually the bride was my high school friend."
"Really? She is my office colleague. I didn't know you were friends with her."
"It has been a really long time."
"Yes. I guess it is nearing four years now."
"Yes. How are you?"
"I am good. How are you? By the way, this is my brother."
"Oh, brother. Hello."
"He is my cousin. We both work in the same office. He is her manager"
"Oh, hello"
"How is life?"
"Everything is good. How about your family? How is everyone at home?"
"Everyone is doing great. Do you remember my younger brother, Arnav?"
"Yeah."
"He went to the US. He is doing his Masters there."
"Oh, that's amazing."
"Do you have the same number? We should be in contact"
"No, we can't"
Everything stopped right there. She was looking at me. The awkwardness sustained for more than a minute. Her brother stepped out of the scene. I was looking at her. I knew exactly what I was talking about. She looked at me and tried to break the silence.
"Alright."
"I have to go now."
"Yes, you may"
For four years, I was alone. Sitting in the dark room, crying my eyes out because she left me as it is. I couldn't listen to her voice anymore. I missed her. I was sad, and depressed and didn't even step out of my room for more than a year. After a year, I picked myself up and continued a routine because of my parents. Now, she is standing there. I still have some soft spot for her. I can't let her take advantage of it with her casual talks and normal conversations. The years of healing will be ruined in a moment when I stress over the same situation.
She must be single. I wonder if she is single. Even if she is single, I wouldn't care. I cared about myself this time. Last time, I didn't know how to communicate my feelings. I stood there listening to her. I didn't defend. I didn't open my mouth because she was determined. Now, I am protecting my peace.
She didn't see me move on. I didn't see her move on. Love includes moving on as well. The hardest yet smallest part. The healing takes the lead.
